DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this award is to foster career development for individuals performing clinical research
and/or translational research in a liver-related area and who have shown commitment to excellence
at an early stage of their research study.
OBJECTIVE
To ensure that a significant portion of young investigators’ time is protected for research, the overall
objective is to enable young investigators to develop independent and productive research careers in
liver disease.
ELIGIBILITY
In order to be eligible for this award, the applicant must adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Project is clinical. “Clinical Research” is defined as studies related to patients or
disease processes having direct contact between the principal investigator and
humans. Clinical research includes epidemiology and clinical trials in liver disease.
2. Project is translational. “Translational Research” is defined as clinical research with
a substantial component of laboratory investigation using serum or tissue
specimens from patients with liver disease.
3. Applicant is currently in transition to becoming a junior faculty member, or has
recently been appointed as a junior faculty member, with an appointment at the

institution, within four years of starting his or her faculty appointment. At least 50
percent effort should be devoted to research activities.
4. Applicant does not hold other similar research awards. Applicants who hold other
research awards (NIH-K08, NIH-K23, Veterans Administration-Research Associate,
Clinical Investigator, AGA Research Scholar Award, Glaxo Institute of Digestive
Health Award, American Liver Foundation Liver Scholar Award, etc.) are not
eligible.
5. Applicant is a member and is sponsored by a member of AASLD.
AWARDS AND REQUIREMENTS
One award of $150,000 will be provided over two years ($75,000 per year). Money may be used for
salary support or for technical support/laboratory supplies for the investigator and no indirect costs
are provided. It is expected that additional funds are available to the candidate in order to carry out
the proposed research.
Awards cannot be transferred to another institution without prior written approval from AASLD.
Recipients must acknowledge the award in all publications resulting from research performed during
the tenure of this award. Abstracts, manuscripts, or other articles that reflect research funded by
this award must acknowledge support from AASLD, and copies must be forwarded to AASLD. In
addition, a scientific progress and financial report must be sent to AASLD at the end of each award
year and at the time when the award is complete.
