Clinical and Translational Research Award in Liver Diseases

DESCRIPTION The purpose of this award is to foster career development for individuals performing clinical research and/or translational research in a liver-related area and who have shown commitment to excellence at an early stage of their research study. OBJECTIVE To ensure that a significant portion of young investigators’ time is protected for research, the overall objective is to enable young investigators to develop independent and productive research careers in liver disease. ELIGIBILITY In order to be eligible for this award, the applicant must adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Project is clinical. “Clinical Research” is defined as studies related to patients or disease processes having direct contact between the principal investigator and humans. Clinical research includes epidemiology and clinical trials in liver disease. 2. Project is translational. “Translational Research” is defined as clinical research with a substantial component of laboratory investigation using serum or tissue specimens from patients with liver disease. 3. Applicant is currently in transition to becoming a junior faculty member, or has recently been appointed as a junior faculty member, with an appointment at the time of the award. The Candidate must be an advanced fellow or junior faculty member in an accredited North American (US, Canada, or Mexico) academic institution, within four years of starting his or her faculty appointment. At least 50 percent effort should be devoted to research activities. 4. Applicant does not hold other similar research awards. Applicants who hold other research awards (NIH-K08, NIH-K23, Veterans Administration-Research Associate, Clinical Investigator, AGA Research Scholar Award, Glaxo Institute of Digestive Health Award, American Liver Foundation Liver Scholar Award, etc.) are not eligible. 5. Applicant is a member and is sponsored by a member of AASLD. AWARDS AND REQUIREMENTS One award of $150,000 will be provided over two years ($75,000 per year). Money may be used for salary support or for technical support/laboratory supplies for the investigator and no indirect costs are provided. It is expected that additional funds are available to the candidate in order to carry out the proposed research. Awards cannot be transferred to another institution without prior written approval from AASLD. Recipients must acknowledge the award in all publications resulting from research performed during the tenure of this award. Abstracts, manuscripts, or other articles that reflect research funded by this award must acknowledge support from AASLD, and copies must be forwarded to AASLD. In addition, a scientific progress and financial report must be sent to AASLD at the end of each award year and at the time when the award is complete. SELECTION CRITERIA Candidates will be evaluated based upon their background, their commitment to a research career, the strength of their research project and the environment in which they will conduct this project. REVIEW PROCESS The AASLD Awards Committee will review the proposals and select a recipient of the award.
