Oncology Nursing Society Foundation Multidisciplinary Cancer Education Grant

Awards: One annual grant of $3,000 sponsored by Meniscus Limited
Purpose: To provide seed money to support an oncology RN in developing and/or implementing a cancer related multidisciplinary education or practice project for healthcare professionals. Priority will be given to those projects that focus on survivorship.
* Multidisciplinary education - Education that involves/impacts more than one discipline of the healthcare team as planners and recipients of the program. More than one healthcare discipline must be involved in the planning of the program and more than one discipline must be the targeted audience for the program. (Example: Nurses and pharmacists work together to plan and implement an education program on pain management for patients with cancer. Attendees (target audience) of the program may be nurses, pharmacists, physicians, and physical therapists).
Selection Criteria:
To be eligible for the award:
1. Applicant must be employed as an oncology nurse for a minimum of 1 year. 2. Multidisciplinary program or project may be new or one in progress for future implementation (preference given towards those programs that affect cancer survivorship). 3. Demonstrate that the impact of the program is on more than one discipline within the multidisciplinary health care team
NOTE: An individual cannot receive this award more than one time.

Oncology Nursing Society Clinical Lectureship
Award: A $2,000 honorarium, one coach airfare to ONS Annual Congress, two-day per diem for Congress, and a plaque. The paper is published in the September issue of the Oncology Nursing Forum.
Purpose: To recognize and support excellence in clinical nursing practice. The lecture is presented at the ONS Annual Congress.
Nominee's Eligibility Criteria: The candidate must meet the following criteria:
Be a registered professional nurse and an active ONS member Have a minimum of two years experience in oncology nursing Be a recognized expert in clinical nursing practice because of his or her contributions to the development of oncology nursing
Criteria: The scoring criteria for judging this nomination packet is as follows:
ONS involvement: Participation should include involvement at the local or national level, and includes membership on committees, holding office, or task force participation. The nominee's clinical practice is consistent with the ONS Scope of Oncology Nursing Practice and demonstrates the use of the following criteria: Use of theoretical concepts Use of the nursing process Professional development of self and other Multidisciplinary collaboration Quality assurance Uses ethical decision making Reviews and applies research into practice (Examples of actual patient contacts, examples of actual patient experiences provided by patients within the reference letters, Clinical practice nursing research, Topics, lectures, a model or theory, developed standards of care, published a model/theory) The nominee is an effective communicator: Examples within reference letters Presentations listed on CV well written based on the conference Clinical practice contribution to literature: Includes articles in newsletters, journals, reports, video, multimedia, computer assisted instruction, or chapters in books Contribution to the development of the oncology nursing practice: Examples within reference letters or on CV Clinical developments such as staff development, program development, patient teaching, support groups Community outreach (Programs such as ACS, Leukemia Society, camps for patients with cancer, survivor's day participation or other related activities Adjunct faculty or preceptor of students) The clinical topic is relevant to membership at large, well written, concerns a current educational need and/or new trend.

Excellence in Radiation Therapy Nursing Award
Award: Monetary award of $1000 and a plaque.
Purpose: To recognize and support excellence in radiation therapy nursing.
Be a registered professional nurse and an active ONS member Have at least two years of oncology nursing experience Be a recognized expert in the field of radiation oncology (e.g., through publications, presentations, research, peer review) Have made a significant contribution to one or more of the following related to radiation oncology: professional/patient education, clinical practice, and /or nursing research Serve as a role model for other radiation oncology nurses.
Clinical Practice. Consistently demonstrates exemplary understanding and execution of the care of patients receiving radiation therapy. Education. Shares knowledge of practice with students, peers, patients, and the community. (Examples include, but are not limited to, joint appointment(s), precepting students, staff development, program planning, patient teaching, outreach programs, and CNE programs). Research. Demonstrates commitment to the advancement of practice through evidence of participation in research and research activities (possible activities include participation as data collector, site coordinator, study monitor, member of research team, co-investigator, principal investigator in a clinical research study related to radiation therapy. In addition, participation in research utilization activities, which promote research-based radiation oncology nursing practice). Speaking. Regularly demonstrates expertise in field through public speaking and is recognized as an effective oral communicator. Publication. Regularly contributes to the literature on issues regarding radiation therapy (includes articles in newsletters, journals, reports, video, multimedia, computer assisted instruction, or chapters in books). ONS Leadership. Participates in ONS activities at the local or national level. (Participation should include involvement at the local or national level, and includes membership on committees, holding office, or task force participation). Professional Practice. Provides leadership in activities, which advance the practice of radiation nursing (activities may include staff development, program development, patient teaching, or support groups. It might also include community outreach such as work with the ACS, Leukemia Society, or camps for cancer patients, or "survivors' day" activities.
Oncology Nursing Society Excellence in Survivor Advocacy Award
Supported by the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS)
Purpose: To recognize and support achievements and involvement of patient advocacy across the cancer treatment continuum, particularly as it relates to survivorship issues.
Be a registered professional nurse and an active ONS member Have at least two years of oncology nursing experience Been actively engaged in patient and survivor advocacy (e.g., legislative, regulatory, insurance discrimination issues) at the federal, state, or local level for at least two years immediately preceding nomination Criteria: The scoring criteria for judging this nomination packet is as follows:
Demonstrated patient and survivor advocacy on a consistent basis in a work setting that cares for individuals with cancer. Helped to recruit nurses or other health professionals to become engaged in survivor advocacy. Collaborated with other organizations, entities, and individual advocates to further recognition of survivorship priorities and issues. Served as a role model for other healthcare professionals and the public by active involvement in cancer support groups, survivor groups, and/or other identified networks or organizations for individuals with cancer.
International Award for Contributions to Cancer Care
Award: A $2,000 award, one coach airfare to ONS annual Congress, one-day per diem for Congress, and a plaque.
Purpose: To recognize a Registered Nurse (RN) (or equivalent) who has contributed to the improvement of cancer care in a country outside the United States.
Selection Criteria: The candidate must be a Registered Nurse (RN) (or equivalent) who works and resides outside of the United States of America, working in any setting, who has contributed to the improvement of cancer care in one or more of the following areas: clinical practice, research, education, or administration. Examples of contributions include but are not limited to:
Creating and implementing a program that has had an impact on cancer care in a country other than the United States, e.g., patient education program, clinical procedure/skill, and pain management. Demonstrating involvement in initiating or supporting a professional oncology organization (e.g., cancer society, nursing organization, cancer coalition). Influencing the practice of cancer care nursing care, e.g., advocate for cancer survivors through influence on government policy/media, publications. Creating a change in health care and/or education standards in nursing practice, e.g., requirements for administration of chemotherapy. Nominee not required to be a member of the Oncology Nursing Society.
Conference Fellowships to the 8th Annual Conference of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society
The 8th Annual Conference of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society will be held 17 -19 February 2011 in Anaheim, California.
APOS will offer five fellowships to the 2011 conference; fellowships will include a $300 travel stipend, waived conference registration and complimentary 2011 APOS membership. Preference shall be given to presenters, and the fellowships will be awarded across disciplines. Fellowships are available to pre- and post-doctoral fellows, assistant professors (or the equivalent), residents and interns.

Objectives
* Qualified nurses in resource-constrained countries. * Facilitate a 3 to 5 day teaching and training workshop by an international faculty of up to 3 experts for groups of qualified nurses. * Provide an opportunity for qualified nurses to augment their professional knowledge and to experience cancer nursing skills as practiced in the receiving host organisation.
