Association of Women Psychiatrists Fellowship
The Association of Women Psychiatrists announces its annual fellowship for outstanding female psychiatry residents who have demonstrated significant potential for leadership and contribution in women’s health. The fellowship will award a $1,500 stipend for travel and participation in the AWP/APA Annual Meetings. The awardee will be on the selection committee for the AWP fellowship for the following year and actively engaged in AWP activities.

The Association of Women Psychiatrists and The Alexandra and Martin Symonds Foundation announces its annual fellowship for outstanding female psychiatry residents. This prestigious fellowship in keeping with AWP goals seeks to identify, mentor and develop new female leaders in psychiatry and improve the present and future personal and professional lives of women.
The goal of this award is to increase the exposure of female psychiatric residents to scientific endeavors that will enhance the residents’ understanding and commitment to the advancement of women’s mental health and the exploration of the impact of gender related issues on the lives of both men and women.
This fellowship was established by the Symonds Foundation, a charitable foundation to promote charitable, educational and scientific activities in general, and specifically, it is dedicated, but not limited to, advancing the study and understanding of gender in psychoanalysis and contemporary culture, including the application of this understanding to the lives of men and women.
The fellowship will award a $1,500 stipend for travel and participation in the AWP/APA Annual Meetings. The awardee with be part of the selection committee for the following year for the Symonds Foundation fellowship and an active part of the AWP organization.

Association of Women Psychiatrists Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Award
The Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Medical Student Award was established in the year 1992 to recognize a female medical student who best exemplifies the spirit of creativity, energy, and leadership that Doctor Dickstein herself epitomizes and seeks to foster in others.
Award The Association of Women Psychiatrists is pleased to sponsor the Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Award. The recipient of the AWP Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Award will be expected to attend the Annual Meeting (in conjunction with the American Psychiatric Association meeting) in Philadelphia, May 2012 where she will receive this award. The winner will receive a plaque honoring her achievements and also be invited to join the award committee for the following year and encouraged to participate in other AWP activities. The awardee will receive $1000 to help defray the expenses of attending the meeting (with any remainder to be used at the awardee’s discretion). Eligibility The award is open to female medical students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, creativity, and leadership. Examples of appropriate disciplines or genres include: service or clinical aspects of medicine; science research; or excellence in art, music, literature, etc.
Timetable The deadline for submission of application materials is February 15. The winner will be notified by April 1 and will receive her award at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Women in Psychiatry’s Annual Meeting which is held in conjunction with the APA Annual Meeting.
Association of Women Psychiatrists Marian I. Butterfield, M.D., M.P.H. Early Career Psychiatrist Award/Lecture
The Marian I. Butterfield, M.D. Early Career Psychiatrist Award was established in the year 2002 to recognize women psychiatrists who have established significant professional careers early in their professional development. The award was established to honor Doctor Marian Butterfield who, early in her career, had already served as President of the Association of Women Psychiatrists and had made significant contributions to research in the area of post traumatic stress disorder in women, particularly, women veterans. Furthermore, Doctor Butterfield had also conducted other research in the areas of womens' mental health, had held many leadership positions in the American Psychiatric Association and had chaired committees related to women's mental health in the American Medical Women's Association.

Request for Submissions: American Psychiatric Association, Division of Research Early Career and Senior Scholar Health Services Research Awards
The American Psychiatric Association, Division of Research supports several awards in the area of Health Services Research. These awards are designed to promote health services research, support young investigators in their research efforts, and recognize significant contributions to the field.
The APIRE Early Career Award provides $500 and an honorary plaque to awardees and is given in recognition of a significant paper in the field of Health Services Research published by a young researcher. The Senior Scholar Health Services Award provides $1,000 and an honorary plaque in recognition of distinguished career contributions to Health Services Research.
The Early Career Award recognizes the best nominated paper published during the past year by an early career psychiatrist (less than 40 years of age or within 5 years of completion of training).
The Senior Scholar Award recognizes singular or sustained research accomplishments by a researcher beyond early career status which have made an important contribution to the field of mental health services research.
Nomination/Application Procedures: Nominations for both awards can be either from the individual or a colleague in the field, such as a department chairperson, division chief, or other health services researcher.* While the proposed applicant must be an APA member, the nominating individual need not be a member and may be from any discipline. The nomination letter should succinctly indicate the contributions that are the basis for the nomination, and the nature of the relationship of the nominator and nominee. A curriculum vitae of the nominee should accompany the letter, along with the nominated paper (for the early career award) and 1-2 papers of greatest significance (for the senior scholar award). Please note that application materials should be submitted electronically.
* Applicants must be notified of their nomination by nominator.
Selection and Conditions of the Award: Awardees will be selected by the APA Committee on Health Services Research, Grayson Norquist, M.D., Chair. The awards will be presented at the Health Services Research Breakfast which is held in conjunction with APA's Institute for Psychiatric Services (IPS) meeting. The 2012 IPS meeting will be held in New York, NY from October 4-7, 2012. Please note that these awards do not cover any travel expenses to the meeting.

Call for Submissions: 2012 Award for Research in Psychiatry
The American Psychiatric Association takes pleasure in inviting submissions for the 2012 American Psychiatric Association Award for Research in Psychiatry. First awarded in 1949 as The Hofheimer Prize, this is the most significant award given for research by the American Psychiatric Association. It is given in recognition of a single distinguished contribution, a body of work, or a lifetime contribution that has had a major impact on the field and/or altered the practice of psychiatry. The Award is intended to cover the full spectrum of psychiatric research.
The Award consists of a $5,000 prize and an honorary plaque to be presented at APA's Annual Meeting in May. The Award also includes an honorary lecture by the awardee.
Candidates for the Award must be citizens of the United States or Canada and be nominated by a sponsor. Sponsors must be members of the American Psychiatric Association. Members of the Award Committee are excluded from submitting nominations.
The sponsor should submit a letter setting out in detail the justification for the nomination, summarizing the nominee's research accomplishments in a specific area, or the coherent theme of the research.
The nominee should submit:
A summary statement emphasizing the principle theme running through the work, its internal cohesiveness and consistency, and scientific implications An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae, and An up-to-date Bibliography.

On behalf of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry, we are inviting submissions for the 2012 APA/AACDP Research Mentorship Award.
This award honors an academic psychiatrist who has in a significant traditional or innovative manner, fostered the pursuit of student research within his/her university department. The nominee’s contribution may be through direct mentorship of individual students, or by the promotion of novel research-oriented training activities within a department or residency program. The award consists of an inscribed plaque and a $1,500 honorarium, to be presented at the APA Annual Meeting.
Only one nomination from any department will be considered. Candidates for the award need not be limited to senior, well-established candidates; innovativeness and dedication will be honored any academic level. Nominees must be members of APA.
The award recipient will be selected by the APA Committee on Research Awards, Stuart C. Yudofsky, M.D., Chair.

The Targeted Research Initiative for Youth grant program recognizes the increasing need for epilepsy and seizure research in populations from birth through the teen years involving pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, behavioral manifestations, medication therapy, and quality-of-life issues.
The Foundation invites research grant applications from investigators interested in psychosocial problems and comorbidities of infants, children and adolescents with epilepsy including, but not limited to topics such as psychiatric comorbidity; treatment of behavioral and cognitive comorbidities, including innovative techniques such as utilization of internet or computer based technologies; studies of the impact of impaired social cognition on educational and occupational outcomes; difficulties and treatment gaps for adolescents transitioning to adulthood; social supports for adolescents with epilepsy; health access and literacy including family communication with health care professionals; the impact of other health conditions (e.g. sleep difficulties, migraines, etc.) on epilepsy treatment and outcome.

Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Award
The AACAP Rieger Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Award recognizes the best published or unpublished paper, written by an AACAP member, that uses a psychodynamic framework and presents clinical material demonstrating the inner life of an infant, child or adolescent in order to illustrate the paper’s idea or hypothesis. The paper should include consideration of a DSM diagnosis and a focused literature review that includes current psychiatric literature. The material for this paper may be drawn from clinical practice or from clinical research.
We are interested in papers from members at all levels of experience (senior, mid-career, and trainees) and all areas of practice (private practice, clinical faculty, full-time academics, and researchers). Unpublished papers and papers published within the last three years may be submitted by their authors. Papers published within the last three years may be nominated by any member of AACAP.
The Award
$4,500 prize; Delivery of an Honors Presentation at the AACAP Annual Meeting in October 2012 in San Francisco, CA; For an unpublished winning paper, future publication is not a requirement or promise of the award but the author will be encouraged to submit the paper for peer review to the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or a psychotherapy journal of the author's choosing. Editorial assistance will be provided, if requested.
Instructions for Authors
no longer than 30 pages, double spaced; a case or cases treated in psychodynamic psychotherapy modalities including the individual, family and group therapy or psychoanalysis; demonstrate an understanding of the inner experience of the child; demonstrate the use of the doctor-patient relationship as a vehicle for change; report signs and symptoms to facilitate locating this case within the descriptive criteria of the DSM to allow comparison with reports and studies in the psychiatric literature; and include a focused literature review of pertinent, current child and adolescent psychiatric writings.

Early Career Psychiatrist Connect Program
Early Career Psychiatrist Connect Program, supported by AACAP's Campaign for America's Kids

Program Description The ECP Connect Program offers the opportunity for up to 15 Regional Organizations of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ROCAPs) to sponsor educational and networking events for ECPs in their regions. This program aims to connect ECPs with their regional organizations; offer professional support; assist and encourage ECPs to find mentors outside of their training programs; and to reduce isolation of ECPs in their regions.
The program provides up to $2,000 for ROCAPs to hold an event or series of events for ECPs in 2012. The ECP Connect Program will disburse the grants to two cohorts of Regional Organizations in 2012.
Eligibility All AACAP Regional Organizations are eligible to apply for the ECP Connect Program. Applications must be co-sponsored by an officer or assembly delegate and an ECP representative from the ROCAP. ROCAPS are eligible to receive one grant of up to $2,000 through this program.
Application Process The AACAP Early Career Psychiatrist Committee developed a Resource Guide with examples of ECP-targeted events. The Resource Guide provides examples of sample programs that ROCAPs might consider when developing ECP program proposals. ROCAPs are encouraged to customize programs to capitalize on their strengths and match the needs and interests of local ECPs.
An officer, assembly delegate, or ECP representative from each applying ROCAP must submit the proposal(s) through the online application. The applicant should provide a detailed budget and a letter of support from the supporting ROCAP.
Evaluation ROCAPs will be responsible for submitting evaluation materials to the AACAP within two weeks of each event. Evaluation materials will include:
Full roster and contact information; One-two page summary/report of the event; Survey results from ALL participants; and Final budget outlining all actual expenses.
Deadline Funding will be provided to two cohorts of ROCAPs. The deadline for the first cohort is March 1, 2012 and the deadline for the second cohort is August 1, 2012.
