The Ben Shuster Memorial Award is presented for the most outstanding research paper by a resident or fellow in training on any clinical work or research in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. The paper must have been delivered at a national meeting (or its equivalent) within the preceding two years prior to the February 1 date of submission. Each entrant must be the sole or senior author and an AAFPRS member. Studies prepared during the first year after completion of residency training will be considered, provided that research was conducted during the author's residency program or fellowship. A certificate and an award of $1,000 are presented.
Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation/American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Combined Grant
Open to applicants who have demonstrated a potential for excellence in research and teaching and serious commitment to an academic research career in otolaryngology or plastic surgery. Applications must show evidence of a collaborative effort between the two surgical specialties. One year, non renewable, $20,000 maximum, one available annually.
The purpose of this award is to support a collaborative PSEF/AAO-HNSF research project.ELIGIBILITYApplicants must have demonstrated a potential for excellence in research and teaching and seriouscommitment to an academic research career in otolaryngology or plastic surgery. Priority will be given tosenior residents, fellows or faculty who have completed residencies or fellowships within four years of theapplication receipt date. Additionally, priority will be given to new projects over those in progress.Applications must show evidence of a collaborative effort between the two surgical specialties. This canbe satisfied in one of the following ways:1. Applicants from both disciplines (one PI and one co-investigator) work together on a joint projectsponsored by one or both of the Divisions or Departments of Plastic Surgery and/orOtolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the parent institution, OR2. An applicant from one discipline works with a preceptor from the other discipline (i.e., a residentfrom the Division of Otolaryngology chooses a preceptor in the Division of Plastic Surgery or viceversa), OR3. An applicant from either discipline works with preceptors from both disciplines on a jointlysponsored project.A letter of understanding should accompany the application (inserted as page 1D), clearly stating whatthe arrangement will be and what respective roles the applicant and preceptor(s) will play in the project.All candidates must be sponsored by the Chairman of his/her Division or Department and by an officialrepresentative of the institution which would administer the Award and in whose name the application isformally submitted.ASPS/PSEF membership required. In the case of residents applying for this grant, given ASPS/PSEFmembership requires that applicants be a board certified plastic surgeon and residents would not be ableto meet this criteria, it is required that the mentor or potential co-investigator be a ASPS/PSEF member.CONDITIONSThe candidate is expected to devote a reasonable amount of his/her time to the proposed research andresearch training activities during the period of the award. Accordingly, applications must be accompaniedby a letter of support from the candidate's department chairperson verifying that the candidate will bepermitted to devote that amount of time to the pursuit of the proposed research and research trainingactivities.TERMS1. Amount: $20,000 maximum. This grant is traditionally awarded every other year (odd years). If thefunds are available it has been offered during even numbered years as well).2. Period: 12 months, non-renewable. Extensions may be granted if needed.

Open to MD junior faculty in the U.S. or Canada; AAFPRS member or candidate to support research projects which will advance facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. $15,000, non-renewable, up to three years to complete project. One available annually.
The purpose of this grant is to support the work of a young faculty member in facial plastic surgeryconducting significant clinical or laboratory research and involved in the training of resident surgeons inresearch. This grant is endowed by funds from Leslie Bernstein, MD, DDS.ELIGIBILITYCandidates for this grant should reside in the U.S. or Canada, be a junior faculty physician (M.D.) in anaccredited otolaryngology - head and neck surgery training program and a member in good standing ofthe AAFPRS. Previous AAO-HNS Foundation research grant recipients are not eligible to compete forthis grant. Candidates who have successfully obtained funding from a private or federal funding agencyas the Principal Investigator for the same research are also ineligible. Candidates who have applied forsupport of the same research from other funding sources, and who are notified of an award from bothanother agency and from the AAFPRS Foundation must demonstrate that the funding will becomplementary, without budgetary overlap.
CONDITIONSResearch supported by this grant should be specifically directed toward the advancement of the state ofknowledge in the theory, techniques, and application of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Whilenot specifically required, proposals which aim to introduce new knowledge and methodology from otherdisciplines to research in facial plastic and/or reconstructive surgery, or which demonstrate collaborativeeffort with members of other related disciplines are encouraged. Projects must be designed so as to yielduseful information within the period of award, but priority will be given to projects that are also innovativewith promise to develop into new long-range or expanded research programs capable of attractingfunding from other sources.

Two available annually.
ELIGIBILITYCandidates for this grant should reside in the U.S. or Canada and be a resident physician (M.D.) in anaccredited otolaryngology - head and neck surgery training program. Applicants must be residents whoare AAFPRS members. Residents at any level may apply even if the research work will be done duringtheir fellowship year. All applicants are required to have sponsorship and oversight of the departmentchair or by an AAFPRS member as mentor. Previous AAO-HNS Foundation research grant recipients arenot eligible to compete for this grant. This grant is available to junior and senior investigators in an amount of $10,000. * The Etiology of Cleft Lip/Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies Research Grant is sponsored by the Peer Foundation in Florham Park, New Jersey. The purpose of the grant is to encourage scientific research on problems related to the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of cleft lip/palate and craniofacial anomalies. It is available to junior and senior investigators in an amount of $10,000. * The Junior Investigators Research Grant is sponsored by the Cleft Palate Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to (a) aid in the development of scientific investigators who are committed to problems related to the cleft lip and palate, and other craniofacial abnormalities, and (b) encourage scientific research on problems related to the diagnosis and treatment of cleft lip and palate, and other craniofacial abnormalities.
