Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award in Therapeutics
The Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award in Therapeutics was established in 1955 to honor individual scientists for outstanding contributions to clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. This award recognizes a meritorious career in drug research, excellence or contributions in direct patient care, and a distinguished teaching career.
The Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award in Therapeutics is the Society's premier award. The goal of the award is to honor a scientist for outstanding contributions to clinical pharmacology and therapeutics over the individual's professional life.
Eligibility A nominee must be able to provide evidence of an exemplary career in drug research, significant contributions to excellence in patient care, and a distinguished teaching career.
Prize and Presentation The Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award in Therapeutics is presented at the ASCPT Annual Meeting. The recipient will present a lecture summarizing the works that form the basis of the award. In addition, the recipient of the award will receive a bronze medal mounted on a plaque and a $1,500 honorarium. Travel expenses, hotel expenses and meeting registration will be reimbursed by the Society.
Each year, the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics Scientific Awards Program seeks to recognize outstanding science in clinical pharmacology. ASCPT Awards span the continuum of clinical pharmacology and recognize every turning point in the career path from young investigator to seasoned scientist.
The deadline to submit a nomination is September 24, 2010 at 4:00pm ET.

2011 Travel Award for Pharmacology Educators
Submission Deadline: January 3, 2011
The ASPET Division of Pharmacology Education is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2011 Travel Award for Pharmacology Educators. The primary goal of this travel award is to promote participation in a FASEB-ASPET Meeting by pharmacology educators and to foster career development in pharmacology education.
Although there are no restrictions on faculty rank, the eligibility criteria are that the applicant (1) has significant teaching responsibilities in the area of pharmacology; and (2) is a member of ASPET (primary or secondary membership in the Division of Pharmacology Education is encouraged). The areas of teaching responsibilities in pharmacology can include instruction in graduate and undergraduate college classes as well as professional schools. In addition to curriculum delivery, preference will be given to the applicant demonstrating efforts in creative aspects of pharmacology education, e.g., curricula design assessment and faculty development.
The award (not to exceed $1,000) can be used to defray any of the following as needed: ASPET dues, travel expenses, registration, hotel accommodations, and cost of meals. All reimbursement expenses must be consistent with the guidelines of ASPET. The applicant will receive a plaque in recognition of his/her receipt of the award.

Section A. Applicant’s Statement (limit to 2000 words) Applicants may wish to address the following in their statement: 1. Describe the breadth and extent of your teaching experiences in pharmacology education. What are goals for pharmacology educational of the instructional unit(s) in which you currently participate? What role do you play in establishing and meeting these goals? That is, describe your involvement in preparation and delivery of undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional school curricula. Discuss your perception of the importance of your educational endeavors in pharmacology education to the mission of the educational unit. 2. Indicate the type of teaching strategies and materials that you use or have implemented. For example, describe how student aids are used to meet the needs of the educational unit and the students. 3. Describe self-improvement strategies that you have developed? For example, describe how you use student feedback and peer evaluation to alter course content and educational perspective and strategy. Be sure to indicate participation in educational workshops and courses to improve their educational efforts 4. Describe how your innovations in pharmacology education have influenced the educational environment(s) in your or other educational endeavors. 5. Describe what you hope to gain from attendance at the ASPET meeting. What contributions do you envision bringing to pharmacology education during your career?”

American College of Clinical Pharmacy Clinical Pharmacy Challenge
There’s a new game in town! ACCP is pleased to offer a novel national pharmacy student team competition. The “ACCP Clinical Pharmacy Challenge” will debut in the fall of 2010. This new competition was developed in concept by the 2008-2009 National Student Advisory Committee and approved by the Board of Regents in July 2009.
Competition Overview
The ACCP Clinical Pharmacy Challenge is a team-based competition. Teams of three students will compete against teams from other schools and colleges of pharmacy in a “quiz- bowl” type format.
Preliminary rounds of the competition will be conducted virtually in September. Semifinal and final rounds will be held live at the ACCP Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, October 16-17, 2010.
Each competition round will consist of questions offered in three distinct segments indicated below. Item content used in each segment has been developed and reviewed by an expert panel of clinical pharmacy practitioners and educators.

Each team advancing to the semi-final rounds held at the ACCP Annual Meeting will receive 3 complimentary student full meeting registrations and each team member will receive a recognition certificate. The second place team would receive a $750 cash award ($250 to each member). The winning team would receive a $1500 cash award ($500 to each member) and each team member would receive a plaque. A team trophy will be awarded to the winning institution.
Students are not required to be a member of ACCP in order to participate. Team registration may be submitted online and must be initiated by a current faculty member of the respective institution Students interested in forming a team should contact their ACCP faculty liaison. If no ACCP faculty liaison has been identified at your institution, any faculty member from your institution may initiate the registration process. All student team members will be contacted and required to confirm his/her eligibility online before a team will be permitted to compete in the 2010 ACCP Clinical Pharmacy Challenge. The deadline to complete your team’s registration and eligibility confirmation is September 8, 2010.

Julius Axelrod Award in Pharmacology
The Julius Axelrod Award in Pharmacology was established to honor the memory of the eminent American pharmacologist who shaped the fields of neuroscience, drug metabolism and biochemistry and who served as a mentor for numerous eminent pharmacologists around the world. The Julius Axelrod Award is presented annually for significant contributions to understanding the biochemical mechanisms underlying the pharmacological actions of drugs and for contributions to mentoring other pharmacologists.The award consists of an honorarium of $5,000, a medal, hotel and economy airfare for the winner and spouse to the annual meeting. The formal presentation of this award and medal will be made at the annual meeting of ASPET. The recipient will be invited by the President of the Society to deliver the Julius Axelrod Lecture and organize the Julius Axelrod Symposium at the annual meeting a year hence. The recipient will also be invited by the Catecholamine Club to give a less formal presentation at its annual dinner meeting that year of the award.There are no restrictions on nominees for this award. However, a nomination must be made by a member of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) or the Catecholamine Club. No member may nominate more than one candidate in a year, and no candidate may be nominated for more than one major ASPET award in any given year. The award shall be made on the basis of originality and uniqueness of accomplishments throughout a long career distinguished by sustained, significant contributions to research and mentoring in pharmacology. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Axelrod Award Committee, appointed by the President of ASPET and comprised of members of ASPET and the Catecholamine Club.Nominations shall be submitted electronically to jane.nelson@aspet.org and shall consist of: 1. Letter of nomination describing the research and mentoring contributions to pharmacology of the candidate that make him/her eligible for this Award, listing major contributions. Up to two additional letters of support would be welcome (need not be from ASPET members). 2. Brief biographical sketch of the candidate. 3. List of individuals mentored by the individual. Up to two letters from former trainees describing the quality of their training with the nominee and its impact on their careers would be welcome (need not be from ASPET members). 4. American Pharmacists Association Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research
The Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research recognizes an individual(s) for encouraging research by peers, students, fellows, residents and others via publications or by directing research, serving as a preceptor, or mentoring in any discipline of the pharmaceutical sciences. This award is considered one of the three most prestigious APhA scientific awards and is presented every three years. The award was established in 1962 as the Stimulation of Research Award and was renamed The Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research in 2002 in recognition of the distinguished scientific and administrative career of Dr. Varro “Tip” Tyler (1926-2001).
CRITERIA: The nominee must have stimulated research in others as evidenced by his/her ability to motivate and inspire by performance or counsel and the ability to lead others toward outstanding accomplishments and effective careers in his/her particular field. Quantity and quality of research stimulated by the nominee in the individuals trained or mentored by the nominee will be given important consideration. This award is not restricted to members of the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science (APhA-APRS) but recipients must be an APhA Member. The research area for which the award is presented will rotate among the disciplines represented by the APhA-APRS sections. In 2011, the award will recognize contributions in the area of clinical sciences. Self-nominations are allowed and encouraged for this award. Remington Honor Medalists are not eligible.
NOMINATION PROCESS: APhA publishes a call for nominations for The Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research. The nominator is responsible for submitting an award nomination packet. The nomination packet is to include the following items: • Nomination on official form available from APhA • A letter from the nominator describing the most important achievements of the nominee and explaining why the nominee meets the criteria for the award • Three supporting letters from scientists who are qualified to judge the significance of the nominee’s stimulation of research should be sent with the nomination. Letters are to address the nominee’s worthiness to receive the award and include (a) the major contributions of the nominee to the research ideas, attitudes, habits and achievements of others; and (b) examples (primarily of published works) of accomplishments stemming from those contributions. If supporting letters are to be sent separately, the nominator should advise APhA that they will be forthcoming by the deadline submission. • Sample article reprints of outstanding research stimulated by the nominee. • To the extent known, a list of individuals (students, graduate students, residents, fellows, etc.) whose research was stimulated or directed by the nominee, or who were directly trained, precepted, or mentored by the nominee should be included. This list should mention the individuals’ current area of research or significant published articles inspired or stimulated by the nominee. • A current full CV SELECTION PROCESS: The final selection is made by the APhA-APRS Awards Committee based upon a review of the recommendations from the appropriate section officers.
NATURE OF AWARD: The award, presented at the APhA Annual meeting consists of an engraved plaque and a $1,000 honorarium. The recipient also receives a complimentary registration to the APhA Annual Meeting; roundtrip airfare; and hotel, meal and miscellaneous expenses for two (2) nights based upon current APhA travel policies.
