American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation Student Research Award
The Student Research Award is presented annually to a pharmacy student for a published or an unpublished paper or report of a completed research project related to pharmacy practice in a hospitals and health systems. Description of Award The Student Research Award consists of a $1,500 honorarium, a $1,000 expense allowance to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, and a plaque. Eligibility Article The research should be completed and the paper prepared before June 1 of the year preceding the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting at which the Award is to be presented. The student should be the primary author of the nominated paper. The text should reveal (or it should be obvious) that it was derived from, or is relevant to, pharmacy practice in hospitals and health systems or should reflect a philosophy applicable to pharmacy practice in those settings. The paper or report should be in publishable format (see “Procedures for submission of manuscripts to journals published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists” in the January issue of the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy for an example of appropriate format). Author At the time of preparation of the paper or report, the author shall have been a full-time student enrolled in an entry-level degree program in an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy. The nomination should be accompanied by a letter from a faculty member certifying that the nominated paper is primarily the student's work. Selection Process A selection panel will select the highest quality paper that is most pertinent to pharmacy practice in hospitals and health systems. Selection Criteria The following criteria and point values will be used: • Originality - 20 points • Significance - 15 points • Research Methodology - 25 points • Data Analysis - 25 points • Validity of Conclusions - 15 points • Total 100 points

Julius Axelrod Award in Pharmacology
The Julius Axelrod Award in Pharmacology was established to honor the memory of the eminent American pharmacologist who shaped the fields of neuroscience, drug metabolism and biochemistry and who served as a mentor for numerous eminent pharmacologists around the world. The Julius Axelrod Award is presented annually for significant contributions to understanding the biochemical mechanisms underlying the pharmacological actions of drugs and for contributions to mentoring other pharmacologists.The award consists of an honorarium of $5,000, a medal, hotel and economy airfare for the winner and spouse to the annual meeting. The formal presentation of this award and medal will be made at the annual meeting of ASPET. The recipient will be invited by the President of the Society to deliver the Julius Axelrod Lecture and organize the Julius Axelrod Symposium at the annual meeting a year hence. The recipient will also be invited by the Catecholamine Club to give a less formal presentation at its annual dinner meeting that year of the award.There are no restrictions on nominees for this award. However, a nomination must be made by a member of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) or the Catecholamine Club. No member may nominate more than one candidate in a year, and no candidate may be nominated for more than one major ASPET award in any given year. The award shall be made on the basis of originality and uniqueness of accomplishments throughout a long career distinguished by sustained, significant contributions to research and mentoring in pharmacology. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Axelrod Award Committee, appointed by the President of ASPET and comprised of members of ASPET and the Catecholamine Club.Nominations shall be submitted electronically to jane.nelson@aspet.org and shall consist of: 1. Letter of nomination describing the research and mentoring contributions to pharmacology of the candidate that make him/her eligible for this Award, listing major contributions. Up to two additional letters of support would be welcome (need not be from ASPET members). 2. Brief biographical sketch of the candidate. 3. List of individuals mentored by the individual. Up to two letters from former trainees describing the quality of their training with the nominee and its impact on their careers would be welcome (need not be from ASPET members). 4. Candidate’s curriculum vitae and bibliography.Receipt date for nominations for the Julius Axelrod Award will be 5:00 pm on September 15, 2010 for an award to be presented at Experimental Biology ’11 in Washington, DC.

American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Student Society Development Grant Program
The ASHP Student Society Development Grant Program (formerly known as Seed Grants) is intended to encourage the development of student societies of health-system pharmacy (SSHPs) in colleges of pharmacy throughout the United States. Grants are intended for use by the ASHP state affiliate and college of pharmacy partners to establish a new SSHP, or to strengthen an existing SSHP, and ultimately to aid the SSHP to achieve official ASHP Recognition (visit www.ashp.org/students for more information on the recognition program); Grant funds available may vary each year and are intended for activities and programs to be implemented during the 2010-2011 academic year. Grant proposals should outline plans for activities and programming as specified in the criteria for the ASHP Student Society Recognition Program; Priority is given to applicants who develop a plan to establish a new SSHP in a school where one does not currently exist; Schools with existing SSHPs may also apply for funds to strengthen the organization in an effort to achieve official ASHP recognition, with preference given to newly established SSHPs (within past 36 months) and established but inactive SSHPs.
Eligibility ACPE accredited and provisionally accredited colleges of pharmacy are eligible to apply. Satellite campuses may apply for separate grants ONLY if they exist (or plan to exist) as a distinct organization from the main campus (e.g. distinct bylaws, officers, meetings, projects, etc.). Grant recipients are not eligible to receive the ASHP Student Society Development Grant in two consecutive years. Evaluation Criteria Follow the guidelines below to draft your grant proposal. Successful proposals will address specifically how the activities and programming planned will help the student society to achieve official ASHP student society recognition. Objective: (limit to 150 words or less) Provide a brief, clear statement of the objective of your grant proposal (e.g. Launch new SSHP; Strengthen fledgling SSHP, Achieve SSHP Recognition, Revive inactive SSHP, etc.). Activity and Programming Plans: (limit to 2-pages or less) Describe the activities and programming you intend to complete to achieve official ASHP Student Society Recognition by meeting the criteria as listed below.
Membership Describe plans to hold at least one membership drive during the academic year to recruit members for ASHP, the ASHP state affiliate (if one exists) and the SSHP
Career Development Describe plans to administer the school-level Clinical Skills Competition (visit www.ashp.org/clinicalskills to learn more. This requirement is waived for new schools without students enrolled in the final two professional years.) Describe plans to coordinate at least two (2) events featuring health-system speakers Describe plans to coordinate at least one (1) informational session on residency training
Professional Development Project Describe plans to participate in at least one (1) project to help ASHP meet the goals expressed in the ASHP Leadership Agenda
Funding: (limit to 1-page or less) Describe funds requested and how these will be utilized to achieve activity and programming plans. Describe additional fundraising plans to supplement grant monies received. (note: Up to $500 can be requested by the college of pharmacy and an additional $250 can be requested if applying jointly with the state affiliate health-system pharmacy organization for a total of $750. Joint applications should clearly describe involvement of state affiliate organization and specifically indicate how additional funds will be used. Funds will be dispersed separately as assigned to the school or state affiliate. Important Dates and Deadlines: All grant applications must be received on or before May 30, 2010. Applications will be evaluated and awards will be distributed on or before July 31, 2010. Grant recipients should plan to present a summary of the proposed and/or competed activities and programming to date as a poster at the 2010 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting Student Society Showcase (tentatively scheduled for December 5th, 2010). A final summary of completed activities and programs should be submitted to ASHP no later than May 1, 2011. Summaries will be posted to the ASHP website.

American Pharmacists Association Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research
The Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research recognizes an individual(s) for encouraging research by peers, students, fellows, residents and others via publications or by directing research, serving as a preceptor, or mentoring in any discipline of the pharmaceutical sciences. This award is considered one of the three most prestigious APhA scientific awards and is presented every three years. The award was established in 1962 as the Stimulation of Research Award and was renamed The Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research in 2002 in recognition of the distinguished scientific and administrative career of Dr. Varro “Tip” Tyler (1926-2001).
CRITERIA: The nominee must have stimulated research in others as evidenced by his/her ability to motivate and inspire by performance or counsel and the ability to lead others toward outstanding accomplishments and effective careers in his/her particular field. Quantity and quality of research stimulated by the nominee in the individuals trained or mentored by the nominee will be given important consideration. This award is not restricted to members of the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science (APhA-APRS) but recipients must be an APhA Member. The research area for which the award is presented will rotate among the disciplines represented by the APhA-APRS sections. In 2011, the award will recognize contributions in the area of clinical sciences. Self-nominations are allowed and encouraged for this award. Remington Honor Medalists are not eligible.
NOMINATION PROCESS: APhA publishes a call for nominations for The Tyler Prize for Stimulation of Research. The nominator is responsible for submitting an award nomination packet. The nomination packet is to include the following items: • Nomination on official form available from APhA • A letter from the nominator describing the most important achievements of the nominee and explaining why the nominee meets the criteria for the award • Three supporting letters from scientists who are qualified to judge the significance of the nominee’s stimulation of research should be sent with the nomination. Letters are to address the nominee’s worthiness to receive the award and include (a) the major contributions of the nominee to the research ideas, attitudes, habits and achievements of others; and (b) examples (primarily of published works) of accomplishments stemming from those contributions. If supporting letters are to be sent separately, the nominator should advise APhA that they will be forthcoming by the deadline submission. • Sample article reprints of outstanding research stimulated by the nominee. • To the extent known, a list of individuals (students, graduate students, residents, fellows, etc.) whose research was stimulated or directed by the nominee, or who were directly trained, precepted, or mentored by the nominee should be included. This list should mention the individuals’ current area of research or significant published articles inspired or stimulated by the nominee. • A current full CV SELECTION PROCESS: The final selection is made by the APhA-APRS Awards Committee based upon a review of the recommendations from the appropriate section officers.
NATURE OF AWARD: The award, presented at the APhA Annual meeting consists of an engraved plaque and a $1,000 honorarium. The recipient also receives a complimentary registration to the APhA Annual Meeting; roundtrip airfare; and hotel, meal and miscellaneous expenses for two (2) nights based upon current APhA travel policies.
