Professional Development Scholarship for Students With a Degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology Who Are Matriculating Toward an Accredited Graduate Degree to Advance Their Career in Nuclear Medicine

Applicant Eligibility: To be eligible for the PDEF Professional Development Scholarship, candidates must:
• Be an active member of the SNM Technologist Section (SNMTS).
• Have completed eight or more hours in the last three years matriculating toward an accredited advanced degree program (Masters or above) that is intended to further their career in nuclear medicine.
• Have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on a four-point scale.
• Have worked in the nuclear medicine profession for at least one of the past five years in a clinical or didactic setting.

Application Deadline: All applications in their entirety must be received, and not simply postmarked, by Thursday, January 15, 2009. Applications received after this date will not be considered. Failure to fully complete the requirements of this application by the deadline will result in disqualification.

Notification of Receipt of Application: SNM will acknowledge the receipt of your completed application via e-mail within two weeks from the date of receipt, no later than Friday, January 30, 2009.

Award Selection Process: It is the responsibility of the SNM Technologist Section (SNMTS) to approve scholarship recipients. All applicants’ personal and institutional information is blinded when reviewed by the SNMTS Executive Board appointed Awards Committee to ensure an unbiased evaluation. Applicants are not guaranteed a scholarship.

Notification of Award and Distribution of Funds: The recipient will be notified first by email, followed by a signed award letter no later than March 31, 2009. The award check of $5,000 will be remitted to the institution where the awardee is enrolled and sent to the program dean/director/advisor for presentation/delivery to the student.

Application Instructions: We recommend using a computer in MS Word format to complete this application. No part of the application should be handwritten, except for signatures. Forms will expand as you type.

Applications will not be considered unless the following have been received by the application deadline:
• A completed application, which includes applicant’s statement and signature.
• Official transcripts of all formal college education issued directly from the institutions’ registrar’s offices (or comparable institution-established administrative office).
• Two completed evaluations (application Sections Va and Vb): one from the program dean/director/advisor, whose signature verifies the applicant’s acceptance into or enrollment in the advanced degree program; and the other from a current professional supervisor, whose signature verifies the applicant’s employment in nuclear medicine for at least one of the past five years. The evaluations must be sent directly to SNM from the evaluators and should not accompany materials sent by the applicant.

Applicant Eligibility: To be eligible for the PDEF Mickey Williams Minority Student Scholarship,
candidates must:

• Be of African American, Native American, Hispanic American, Asian American or Pacific Islander decent [Eligible Native Americans include American Indian, Eskimo, Hawaiian and Samoan].
• Hold current U.S. residency status of U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident. Individuals with a visitor, student, or G-series visa are not eligible.
• Be currently enrolled in or accepted into an entry-level nuclear medicine technology program at the time of application. Award is open to students in associate and baccalaureate level programs only. Individuals with previous certificates or degrees in nuclear medicine sciences are ineligible.
• Demonstrate financial need.
• Have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better on a four-point scale, with evidence of high academic performance.

Paul Cole Scholarships for Students Who Are Enrolled in or Accepted for Enrollment in Associate, Baccalaureate or Certificate Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology

The Paul Cole Scholarship is named in memory of Paul Cole, CNMT, who served as President of the SNM Technologist Section (SNMTS) in 1986 and who was known as a champion of education for technologists. This scholarship is funded by the Education and Research Foundation for the SNM.

Applicant Eligibility: To be eligible for the Paul Cole Scholarship, candidates must:
• Demonstrate financial need.
• Be enrolled in or accepted into an institution accredited through the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT). To see if your institution is accredited with JRCNMT, please visit their website at www.jrcnmt.org. Award is open to students in associate, baccalaureate, and certificate level programs.
• Have maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better (on a 4.0 scale) or B average in a nuclear medicine technology core curriculum.

Pilot Research Grants in Nuclear Medicine/Molecular Imaging

The pilot research grants are designed to help basic or clinical scientists in the early stages of their career conduct research that may lead to further funding. The Mitzi and William Blahd, MD Pilot Research Grant is awarded to the applicant with the highest-ranked proposal. These SNM grants are made possible by support from the Education and Research Foundation for the SNM.

Award Amount: $25,000

Number of Awards to be Offered: Two

Applicant Eligibility:
• Basic or clinical scientists employed by academic and research-oriented organizations in North America are eligible.
• Applicants must be no more than five years post training.
• Applicant must not have served as the principal investigator of a peer-reviewed grant for more than $50,000 in a single calendar year.
• Preference will be given to individuals who have demonstrated great potential for a research career in the field of nuclear medicine/molecular imaging.
• No grantee may receive more than one grant in any one year. Likewise no other grant request will be considered until a satisfactory summary of an earlier grant is received.

Application Deadline: Completed application must be received by Friday, February 20, 2009. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

Notification of Receipt of Application: SNM will acknowledge the receipt of your completed application via e-mail within two weeks from the date of receipt.

Notification of Award: Recipients will be notified first by email, followed by a signed award letter no later than June 2009.

Grant Payments:
• Grant funds will be directly remitted to the institution.
• The award will begin no later than September 2009 with two payments spaced equally apart over the grant period.

Support Provisions/Restrictions
• Grants will be limited to a time span of one year; extensions are not often allowed, but if requested will be reviewed and to the discretion of the SNM Grants and Awards Committee.
• Only one proposal per applicant will be accepted.
• Funds may supplement other funds, but not duplicate other support.
• The grant will not pay salaries, institutional overhead costs or indirect costs.

Reports
• A summary report and an accounting of funds will be due within 60 days after completion of the research project.
• Grantees are expected to submit results of the research as an abstract for presentation at the SNM Annual Meeting and/or as a scientific manuscript to the Journal of Nuclear Medicine

Publications: All posters, publications and oral presentations must contain appropriate acknowledgement of this grant support, identifying by name the SNM and the Education and Research Foundation.

Selection Criteria/Review Process
• The SNM Grants and Awards Chairman will appoint SNM members with expertise in the subject matters of the research proposals to assess the applications.

In assessing the applications evaluators will consider the following questions:
• How relevant are the research goals and the project to advancing nuclear medicine/molecular imaging?
• How original and innovative is the proposed project?
• Is the protocol based on good scientific reasoning? Is the proposed methodology appropriate?
• Is the applicant well prepared to carry out and complete the research in the timeframe proposed?
• Does the applicant have adequate support from his or her institution/department?

Proposals not chosen to receive funding will receive a letter summarizing the suggestions/comments of the reviewers of their proposed research. SNM grant proposals are reviewed in confidence; reviewers agree to not share the proposals that they are assigned to review, unless requested by the SNM Awards Committee; furthermore, SNM is not authorized to release the identities of the proposal reviewers to the applicants.

The postdoctoral program will support a two-year research endeavor that promotes integration of molecular imaging into the career of the trainee.

Applicant Eligibility:
•MD, MD/PhD, and PhD applicants are eligible.
•Applicants from any country may apply.
•Applicants must hold a full-time position in an educational institution when the award starts.
•Applicants must have completed all basic training and be no more than 2 years post training.
•Applicants must not have served as a principal investigator on peer-reviewed grants totaling $50,000 or more in a single calendar year.
•Preference will be given to individuals who have demonstrated great potential for a research career in the field of molecular imaging.
•Only one application per trainee is accepted. No grantee may receive more than one SNM research grant in any one year. Likewise no other research grant request or continuation will be considered until a satisfactory summary of an earlier grant is received.

Amount of Award and Presentation: $60,000 over two years. A $30,000 award check drawn to the institution will be sent upon commencement of the research period. A second award check of $25,000 will be drawn upon receiving a report of progress during the first 10 months. The third $5,000 payment will be made to the institution upon receiving the final report at the end of the research period. If not already a member of SNM, the postdoctoral awardee will be granted complimentary membership to SNM for the length of the research endeavor.

Molecular Imaging Research Grant for Junior Medical Faculty

The objective of this program is to provide two-year salary support for one junior faculty member in an academic/research setting to enable them to engage in molecular imaging research related to diagnostic or therapeutic applications.

•Applicants must be practicing in an academic/research setting as a faculty member in the United States.
•Applicants must be within 5 years of their initial faculty appointment with an academic rank of instructor or assistant professor (or equivalent).
•Applicants must provide a detailed proposal of the proposed research activity.
•Applicants must not have received grant/contract amounts totaling $50,000.00 or more in a single calendar year as the principle investigator.

•Multidisciplinary projects are encouraged.

The Society of Nuclear Medicine Student Fellowships are designed to stimulate students’ interest in molecular imaging/nuclear medicine by supporting their full-time participation in clinical and basic research activities for three months (or less).

The top-ranked candidate is designated the Bradley-Alavi Fellow, named by the donors—Drs. Jane and Abass Alavi—in honor of Dr. Stanley E. Bradley, a professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons until 1978 and a prominent researcher in the fields of renal physiology and liver disease.

These fellowships are made possible with the support of the Education and Research Foundation for the SNM.

FELLOWSHIP PROVISIONS AND INSTRUCTIONS

Award Amount: $3,000 for a three-month fellowship period.

Number of Awards to be Offered: Seven

Applicant Eligibility: A candidate from any country may apply. The applicant must:
•Be enrolled in a medical, pharmacy or graduate school, or be an undergraduate student demonstrating outstanding competence in nuclear medicine and/or molecular imaging research.
•Complete fellowship in the United States by December 31, 2009.
•Carry out fellowship during a three-month period that starts no earlier than March 2009.

Purpose: To provide specialty training to young physicians who are not yet professionally established in the radiologic sciences. Fellows will devote a minimum of 50% of their time to the approved training program under the guidance of a scientific advisor. Applicants may apply for funding 6 months or 18 months before the fellowship is scheduled to begin.

Nature of Projects: Any specialty fellowship training program in the radiologic sciences. It is expected that fellows will receive some research exposure during the fellowship training period.

Education Scholar Grant

Purpose: To fund individuals in radiology or related disciplines who are seeking an opportunity to develop their expertise in radiologic education. The grant is intended to fund recipients' part-time salaries and educational expenses such as books and tuition, while pursuing advanced training in the field of education. The overall goal of this program is to develop teachers and educational leaders in radiology who can effectively share their knowledge with the radiology community.

Nature of Projects: Grants will be given for any advanced training in the discipline of education where the applicant can demonstrate an interest in developing expertise as an educational resource for radiology. Each applicant is required to design an educational program that will describe: The availability of educational resources; the quality and amount of protected time available and designated toward the educational goal; a plan for program results that will have a broad, long-range impact; demonstrated ways this education grant will be used to benefit the field of radiology; and measurements and/or methods that will be used to evaluate the educational success of the project.

Amount: Up to $75,000 United States Dollars (USD) annually for 2 years ($150,000 USD total) to be used for part-time salary support and/or educational expenses. (books, tuition, etc.).

Eligibility:

* Applications are accepted from individuals throughout the world.
* Applicant must hold a faculty position in a department of radiology, radiation oncology, or nuclear medicine within an educational institution at the time of application.
* Applicant must hold an MD degree or equivalent.
