Please note: Applicants applying for the Gottschalk Grant, Halpin Grant, Merrill Grant, or Siegel Grant will be automatically considered for any of the four awards. There is no need to send in separate applications.

Purpose
To provide funding for young faculty to foster evolution to an independent research career by providing transition funding toward successful application for an RO1 grant. Applicants must be within 7 years of initial faculty appointment and may be in the last two years of a mentored award. Applicants must be able to show evidence of progress toward capability to oversee an independent research project or its equivalent.

Although not a restricted award, preference for the Norman Siegel Research Scholar Grant will be given to a pediatric investigator.

Although not a restricted award, preference for the John Merrill Grant will be given to a transplant investigator.

The Halpin Foundation-ASN Research Grant supports research on topics in immunology and genetics directly relevant to human membranous nephropathy. The research proposal must include an explanation of how the proposed research is relevant to human membranous nephropathy.

Eligibility
Applicants must be a resident of North America, an active member of the ASN (full dues-paying membership), and hold an MD or PhD or equivalent degree. At the time of submission the applicant's membership must be current and their dues paid. Appointment to full-time faculty must be confirmed in writing by the Department Chair, indicating the date of first full-time faculty appointment, and providing assurance that the department will provide needed resources for conducting independent research (laboratory and office space, salary support, and protected research time of at least 75%). It must be assured that the proposed project is independent of previous mentors.

Additionally, applicants will be considered ineligible should they submit more than one type of ASN grant application during any particular grants cycle. ASN career development grants are not renewable and previous recipients are not eligible for a second grant.

Grant Amount
The award will provide $100,000 annually for two years, beginning between July 1 and September 1, and will cover salaries/supplies related to the candidate's research proposal. A maximum of 10% ($10,000) may be used to cover indirect costs at the candidate's sponsoring institution.

Previous or Current Funding Allowed
Applicants are allowed to have currently, or have had previously, extramural (NIH or Foundation) mentored career development grant funding (e.g., NIH K08). However, total grant funding including the ASN career development grant cannot exceed $250,000 in annual direct costs, irrespective of scientific overlap. The amount of the ASN grant will be reduced as appropriate if total funding exceeds this amount at any time during the funding period of the grant.

Use of Grant Funds
Salary/Fringe: Up to $70,000 can be used for the PI's salary/fringe.

Supplies: Any or all of the funds can be used for research supplies or support salary of research assistant.

Equipment: Funds cannot be used to purchase equipment that costs more than $5,000, unless such purchase is clearly justified in the research plan and approved by ASN.

Restrictions: Up to $2,000 a year may be used on travel to attend relevant scientific meetings. Funds may not be used for clinical or administrative time.

Post-Award Requirements
A progress report is required for non-competitive renewal of the grant for the second year. A final report is also required at the end of the funding period. The award is for continuous support, and interruptions in the period of support will require prior written approval from ASN.

Progress reports should include the following: Summary of progress during tenure of the ASN award, publications during the tenure of the award, an updated listing of current and pending grant support from all sources, and plans for continuing the research project in the next year.

Additional Requirements
Research Scholars are required to devote at least 75% of their time to research. Awardees shall be known as Carl W. Gottschalk Research Scholars of the American Society of Nephrology, Halpin Foundation-ASN Research Scholars of the American Society of Nephrology, John Merrill Grant Scholars of the American Society of Nephrology or Norman Siegel Research Scholars of the American Society of Nephrology.

Researchers shall acknowledge ASN's support in publications resulting from their proposed work.

Each grant may be transferred from one institution to another only with the prior approval of ASN. ASN must receive written assurance from the Department Head/Division Director of the new institution that the investigator at the time of or before the invitation will be permitted to devote at least 75% of his or her time to research, have a full-time faculty appointment, and that appropriate research facilities will be available.

Evaluation Criteria
The Review Committee will consider the potential of the applicant and the proposed project for eventual funding by a NIH R01 grant or its equivalent. Assessment will include the qualifications of the applicant with respect to prior training, productivity, and independence, as well as the scientific merit of the proposed project. The institutional commitment to the development of the applicant as an independent investigator will also be assessed.

No-Cost Extension Policy
No-cost extension requests must be submitted to Holly Osborne (hosborne@asn-online.org) in writing at least 30 days before the end of the research period. A progress report and a financial report must be submitted along with the extension request letter. Grants may only be extended for one year at a maximum of 50 percent of the previous year's funding.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding for research projects, thesis, and dissertations for ANNA full members, who are certified by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC) and who are in graduate school.

PROJECT TYPES ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING

Research: Funding for pilot studies and partial funding for research projects, thesis, or dissertations.

SELECTION OF RECIPIENT

1. The Research Committee will review and score the proposals for scientific merit and feasibility based on the criteria stated below.

2. ANNA will award funding based on scientific merit and availability of funds.

AWARD AMOUNT
ANNA grants up to $5,000 per proposal will be awarded.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
1. Full Membership in ANNA.
a. The principle investigator must be a member of ANNA for the duration of the project.

2. The principle investigator must be currently certified by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC).

3. Must be currently enrolled in a graduated program on the masters, doctorate, or post doctorate level. Priority will be given to graduate students, however, if funds are available, the award may be granted to ANNA members who currently have a masters degree.

4. The grant applicant(s) who are full members of ANNA must provide evidence of his/her/their experience and credentials demonstrating the ability to complete the proposed project and commitment to nephrology nursing.

5. Applicants have the option of contacting a member of the ANNA Research Committee to discuss ideas and use the assistance of the committee to connect them with appropriate mentors, if needed. Applications submitted early for review will not receive special consideration when reviewed with other applications. All grant applications are treated equally in the review process.

6. The project may be a new endeavor or one already in progress.

7. The applicant must complete the entire grant application form according to the instructions.

8. Other funding sources must be disclosed.

9. A separate proposal submitted under a different principal investigator/project manager or a different project title for the same study will not be eligible to receive a grant through this or any other ANNA sponsored research program.

10. The proposal must demonstrate the following:
a. Significance and applicability of the project to nursing, education, or related therapies
b. For research proposals, sound methodology in accordance with recognized nursing research guidelines
c. For other proposals as outlined previously, sound methodology and implementation strategies depending on the type of project
d. Approval by the appropriate Institutional Review Board
e. Support from the institution where the project will be implemented
f. Feasibility and likelihood of successful completion and support from faculty

11. Members of the ANNA Research Committee may apply for funds through this program. These applications will be reviewed in accordance with the Research Committee conflict of interest policy.

12. The ANNA Board of Directors reserves the right to make the final decision on all grant monies awarded.

American Nephrology Nurses' Association Evidence-Based Research Grants

PURPOSE
The purpose of this grant is to encourage the discovery of new knowledge as well as the incorporation of the best scientific evidence currently available into the practice of nephrology nursing, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.

PROJECT TYPES ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING

• Primary Research: funding on a smaller scale as compared to the research grant award. Pilot studies, and partial funding for research projects, thesis, or dissertations.

• Evidence Summary: synthesis of the body of research on a topic of relevance to practice into a single, meaningful statement of the state of the science. Examples include systematic review, meta analysis, review of the literature.

• Research Translation: translation of evidence into practice recommendations. Examples include: clinical practice guidelines that may include clinical pathways, protocols, and algorithms.

• Integration: adoption of a practice change based on evidence. This involves changing both individual and organizational practices through formal and informal channels. Examples include implementation of a clinical pathway based on evidence found in the literature, use of an evidence-based algorithm found in the literature.

• Evaluation: evaluation of an EBP project already implemented in the clinical setting.

• Other projects. Examples include: staff development programs on topics such as evidence based practice, learning to evaluate the research literature, how to effectively conduct a literature search, development of patient teaching materials that are evidence-based, implementation of a journal club to introduce EBP. Consult with the Research Committee to determine appropriateness of other project ideas.

Purpose

To award an individual or group who has made a major contribution to the dissemination of research to nurses for use in clinical nephrology nursing practice, education, and/or administration. Dissemination of research findings refers to a systematic effort or project that is directed towards making the essentials of completed research available to nurses in an accessible and usable format. Research-based projects may take various forms such as publications, audio/video tapes, conferences, consultation, or educational programs.

Award: $350

Eligibility Criteria

1. Primary contact person or nominee must be an ANNA member, having been a member for a minimum of the last 2 years as of the awards/scholarship application deadline.
2. Actively involved in nephrology nursing related health care services.
3. Eligible projects must be focused on the development of an evidence-based project for nephrology nursing and relevant to nephrology nursing practice using ANNA's Nephrology Nursing Standards of Practice and Guidelines for Care (2005) as a guide.
4. The primary focus of the submitted project must be sharing findings of research with other nurses.
5. The submission package must demonstrate that the research-based project was:
1. Presented in a form that is useful to nurses in nephrology settings.
2. Made available to nurses in a convenient manner and at a reasonable cost.
3. Packaged in a manner that will attract nurses to use or apply findings in their research, teaching, administration, and/or practice.
4. Based on science using a synthesis of existing research.

The Lazaro J. Mandel Young Investigator Award was established in 1999 in memory of Lazaro J. Mandel, professor of physiology at Duke University and long-standing APS member. The Lazaro J. Mandel Young Investigator Award is given annually to an individual demonstrating outstanding promise based on his/her research program in epithelial or renal physiology. Applications are accepted from members of APS working within the U.S. who hold an academic rank no higher than assistant professor. The award of $4,000 is designated for the use of the awardee in his/her research program. The award does not include any indirect cost reimbursement. The recipient receives complimentary registration to attend the meeting and a plaque presented at the APS Business Meeting held at the Experimental Biology meeting.

Clinical Scientist in Nephrology Program

The American Kidney Fund (AKF) is pleased to invite applications for its Clinical Scientist in Nephrology (CSN) Program for academic year 2011-2012. The goal of the CSN Program is to improve the quality of care provided to kidney patients and to promote clinical research in nephrology. This goal is achieved by enhancing the training of nephrologists who desire to pursue an academic career and whose primary professional commitment is to scholarship in the provision of patient care. Awardees conduct prevention and outcomes research and receive advanced training in essential skills such as medical ethics, biostatistics and epidemiology.

The Program
A Clinical Scientist in Nephrology fellowship may be granted yearly. The maximum duration of each fellowship is two years. The maximum level of funding is $80,000 per year and shall be used principally to support the candidate and his/her career development. This sum is expected to cover the individual fellow’s salary (which will follow NIH Guidelines according to the post-graduate year plus comparable fringe benefits at the institution, not to exceed $50,000) as well as training-related expenses.

Timeframe
The above documents must reach the American Kidney Fund on or before December 1, 2010 . The AKF Selection Committee will review all applications and proceed to a preliminary ranking in January 2011. The top candidates will be interviewed in January and the successful candidate(s) will be notified in February 2011. If awarded, funding will begin July 1, 2011 and go through June 30, 2012.

Grant for Advanced Training in Renal Pathology

Deadline: October 1, 2010

Award Amount: $2,000 plus living accommodations.

About the Grant: Applications will be accepted from pathology residents in-training who seek to gain intensive exposure in renal pathology. Residents will have the opportunity to work at Nephropath, a state of the art laboratory in Little Rock, Arkansas. Nephropath processes and interprets over 4500 renal biopsies per year providing a high volume of both routine and challenging cases in all areas of nephropathology including native renal disease (adult and pediatric) and renal transplant pathology.

Purpose: The resident will learn the importance of utilizing multiple modalities in the interpretation of renal biopsies including light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopic techniques. This one-month rotation serves as an excellent base for a resident who has interest in applying for a subsequent year-long fellowship in renal pathology.

Time Commitment: Four (4) weeks.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a CAP Junior Member or have an application pending, and must be currently enrolled in an United States AP or AP/CP pathology training program. This elective is ideally suited for PG2 residents, however, PG3 and PG4 residents are also encouraged to apply. No previous training in renal pathology is required.

Selection Process:

Outcomes and Accomplishments: At the end of the rotation, awardee will be able to:
* Define the major glomerular disease associated syndromes
* Recognize the major glomerular lesions associated with each syndrome
* In the diagnosis of renal disease, awardee will be able to describe:
o the utility of the special stains for light microscopy
o the utility of the antigens examined using immunofluorescence microscopy
o the utility of the electron microscope
* Understand the importance of clinicopathologic correlation to the interpretation of renal biopsies
