Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation Chapter Education Grants

The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation promotes hospice and palliative nursing at the local level through Chapter Education Grants.  Each year HPNF awards up to six (6) grants to HPNA Chartered Chapters.  The purpose of the grants is to benefit chapter members through education and expand chapter membership.  Grants are typically $500.  The grants are competitive and winners are selected from the applicant pool by the Chapter Education Grant Review Committee consisting of HPNF Board members and HPNA members.

To be eligible for the grants, chapters must:

· Be chartered and in good standing

· Propose a chapter project that benefits the entire chapter through educational projects and/or expansion of membership

· Receive no more than 2 grants during any five-year period

· Submit a completed Chapter Education Grant Application including the required project:

· Computer generated typewritten project, maximum one-page, single-spaced, 12 point font; and describe:

o Quantifiable goal

o Methodology

o How the project will be evaluated

o  How the project is expected to benefit members of the entire chapter

o How the project is expected to expand membership within your chapter

· Submit all materials so they are received by HPNF on or before June 1

· HPNF Chapter Education Grant Review Committee takes into account applicant's adherence to submission guidelines, completeness of applications, and quality of responses when reviewing applications of the applicant pool

Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation Individual Education Scholarships

The Individual Education Scholarships were established by the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation in 2004 to provide financial assistance for nursing professionals earning academic degrees.  These scholarships support nursing professionals who are advancing their careers through academic achievement. 

Scholarships of $500 are awarded to HPNA members and may be used for but are not limited to: tuition, books, computer software, and supplies that are related to nursing education.

Four scholarships are offered each year.  They are directed to nurses at all levels of nursing education from entry level through graduate degrees (i.e. Associates, Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate).

The scholarships are competitive and winners are selected from the applicant pool by the Individual Education Scholarship Review Committee consisting of HPNF Board members and HPNA members. Scholarship checks are sent directly to the awardees. 

To be eligible for the scholarships, candidates must:

Hold a current HPNA membership

Be providing hospice and palliative care nursing

Be enrolled in a school of nursing or doctoral program, be formally matriculated, in good standing, and have successfully completed at least one semester of coursework

Submit a complete Individual Education Scholarship Application including all required attachments:

letter from the academic program or school that verifies enrollment and good academic standing (or use the optional Enrollment Verification Form)

letter of reference which should include assessment of your individual scholastic ability and commitment to hospice and palliative care

resume or CV (2 pages or less)

essay; mimimum 250 words; maximum one-page, single-spaced, 12 point font; and describe:

your professional goals

your plan to use this education to advance hospice and palliative care

Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation and Project on Death in America  Nursing Leadership Award in Palliative Care

The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation, in accordance with a grant from the Project on Death in America, selects a nurse from nominated candidates who has emerged as a leader in palliative care and whose work has improved nursing care for dying patients and their families. 

The focus of the Nursing Leadership Award in Palliative Care is to transform our society’s medical culture and give priority to education, training, and clinical service in end-of-life care issues.  By publicizing the activities and efforts of nursing leaders, and their impact on improving end-of-life care, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation furthers the mission of Project on Death in America to understand and transform the culture and experience of dying and bereavement.

The award is competitive and one winner is selected from the nomination pool, by the HPNF PDIA Nursing Leadership Award Review Committee, consisting of HPNF Board members and HPNA members. The awardee is recognized at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine/Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Annual Assembly. The award includes a $750 cash prize and travel-related expenses to attend the Annual Assembly. The award recipient is encouraged to submit an article for publication in a future issue of the Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing.

To be eligible for the award, nominees must:

· be a current HPNA Member

· work in the field of hospice and/or palliative nursing care with his/her compassionate, skilled work and end-of-life care implemented in the healthcare system

· be viewed as someone who promotes and supports improving end-of-life care

· be seen as a leader in the field of hospice and/or palliative care in his/her setting especially in the relief of pain

· promote a better understanding of the experiences of dying and bereavement

· empower caregivers to become agents of change within their own healthcare organization

· have implemented or effected one of the following:

o educational program

o training program

o research specific to hospice/palliative care

o model service delivery program

o national policy changes

o  nomination materials must be received by HPNF on or before June 1

·  The HPNF PDIA Nursing Leadership Award Review Committee takes into account adherence to submission guidelines, completeness of nomination materials and quality of responses when reviewing nominations

Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation Certification Research Grant

The purpose of the HPNF Certification Research Grant is to seek the impact of certification within the research topic that pertains to palliative care. As long as there is a mechanism of measuring the impact of certified versus non-certified hospice and palliative nurses, the research can be on any relevant topic. Something as simple as the investigator determining the certification status of any nurse participants would suffice as a certification component worthy of grant approval.

One grant of up to $15,000 will be awarded annually.  Proposals are due on or before June 1 of the respective year.  The funding date is September 1 of the same year.  Funds for this grant do not cover expenses incurred prior to the funding date.

The Certification Research Grant is competitive and the awardee is selected from the applicant pool by the Certification Research Grant Review Committee consisting of HPNF Board members and HPNA members with research expertise.

General Grant Information

· The funding period is for 12 months from the receipt of the award

·  Proposals may be resubmitted one time to HPNF

·  A final report of expenditures and final scientific report must be submitted to HPNF 90 days following the original or amended project funding period

·  The application abstract and final report will be posted on the HPNF website

· Publication of research findings in peer-reviewed scientific or professional journals such as the Journal for Hospice and Palliative Nursing is expected

To be eligible for the grant, the Principal Investigator must:

·  Be actively involved in some aspect of hospice and palliative care practice, education, or research

·  Preference will be given to HPNA members

·  Hold a master’s or doctoral degree or be enrolled in a doctoral program

·  Submit a completed application in English

· Have a project that is ready for implementation when funding is received

· Complete project within one (1) year of funding

· Sign a Certification Research Grant Application Agreement

· Submit all materials so that they are received by HPNF on or before June 1

·  HPNF Certification Research Grant Review Committee takes into account applicants’ adherence to submission guidelines, completeness of proposal, and quality of proposal when reviewing proposals of the applicant pool
