American Epilepsy Society Seed Grant Program
This program is intended to foster collaborative interactions between two or more established investigators* to make future grants related to epilepsy more competitive for larger awards, and to fuel multi-investigator projects. These small awards are designed to enable information exchange/technology transfer, travel of postdoctoral fellows between laboratories, and modest supplies for the project.
Criteria:
• At least one PI must be an active member of the Society
• Must be a new initiative that will add value to the field or fill a gap in knowledge
• Techniques in a collaborative effort must be complementary
• Must involve two or more established investigators, at least one of which is an epilepsy-focused investigator.
• Although not required, trans-disciplinary projects, projects integrating clinical and basic research, and research directions with translational relevance are encouraged.
*An established investigator is defined as having at least an Associate Professor or equivalent level appointment, and who has a history of successful NIH/NSF/VA funding. Their work can be focused on basic, translational, or clinical research.
Funding: A maximum of five one-year grants in the amount of $20,000 each will be awarded annually. Grants are non-renewable.
Application Procedures:
Application should be no more than two pages not counting the face page and include:
a) a face page (use this Word document or facsimile)
b) an overview of the research and technical expertise of the participating laboratories/clinical research sites.
c) the research collaboration that is proposed,
d) how the seed grant mechanism will foster this research and the overall collaboration, and
e) a budget.
Applications should also include an NIH format Biosketch for all principal investigators, including present and past funding. This Biosketch should highlight the 5 most significant publications of each investigator published over the past 10 years.
Deadlines
There are three rounds of consideration each year. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of the Research & Training Council and results will be announced within six weeks of the application deadline.
Submission deadlines (no extensions):
• March 29, 2013
• June 29, 2013
• September 30, 2013
Applications (in Word or PDF format) should be sent to the AES Office by email to ctubby@aesnet.org by close of business on the date of the deadline.
American Epilepsy Society and the Epilepsy Foundation Research Infrastructure Awards
Deadline: August 19, 2013
Research Infrastructure Awards Program to Establish Collaborative Multicenter Research Programs:
The AES and the Epilepsy Foundation are partnering to provide an opportunity for scientists to obtain support for nationwide or international networks of clinical or basic science researchers focused on understanding the causes, consequences and treatment of epilepsy. Multicenter research programs are viewed as an important venue through which investigators from around the world can establish centralized databases, common protocols, shared resources, core laboratories and exchange rapidly developing techniques and technologies. Such cooperative efforts are anticipated to hasten the speed of discovery. These funds are meant to be used to support pilot projects and hold organizational and planning sessions with representatives from each center in the planned network. These planning sessions should also be used to develop the research effort and collect results that would be used to prepare and submit a larger application for support from the Federal Government and establish the multicenter research program over the long term. Principle Investigators should be members of the Society.
Awards will be based on a proposed budget and are anticipated to be up to $50,000.00 per year. A one year no-cost extension may be requested with justification. A second year of funding can be requested via a progress report and competitive renewal application after the first year is completed. Any funds unexpended at the end of the funding period(s) must be returned.
Application Procedures and Information:
1. Scientists interested in applying for a Research Infrastructure Award should send a letter of intent by August 19, 2013. Letter of intent package must include:
• Letter (Max 2 pages)
1. A listing of the centers involved in the network
2. The rationale for the proposed network
3. Explanation of why the work is not covered by current grant support and why the proposed multicenter network is important.
• A 250 word abstract
• A 3 page (NIH format) biosketch with current funding for each investigator in the proposed network This single electronic document should be e-mailed to ctubby@aesnet.org. Appropriate proposals will be selected within 1 month (notification on or about October 4, 2013).
Selected candidates will then be asked to submit a complete application by November 1, 2013 for funding in January 2014.
American Epilepsy Society Research Initiative Awards
AES Grants for Innovative, Collaborative Research
The American Epilepsy Society has established a novel grant opportunity for its membership that will provide seed support to encourage innovative basic or clinical research associated with the epilepsy field. Awards from the Research Initiative Fund will be given to AES members who are established investigators.
• "Established" means associate professor level and above, or assistant professor with secure grant funding
• "Innovative" means that the proposed research represents a new direction for the investigator, and is sufficiently novel that funding would not be available from NIH or other standard funding sources.
• Incorporation of collaborative aspects to innovative research awards are encouraged, but not required. "Collaborative" means that the proposed project requires the participation of one or more investigators outside the candidate’s area of expertise, preferably in a different department or a different institution.
The objective of these awards is to encourage established investigators to think "outside the box" and involve other established investigators who may not now be working in the field of epilepsy. Members who are candidates for an Epilepsy Foundation Junior Investigator Award or AES and EF research or training fellowships will not be considered.
Requests for carry-over of up to 20 percent of initial funding may be submitted at the end of the 12 months of funding. Otherwise, any remaining funds unexpended at the end of the 12 month period must be returned.
Research Initiative Fund Award Subcommittee of Research & Training Committee
Awards will be made based on the proposed budget, with an anticipated award of $30,000 – $50,000 per project. Up to three projects will be funded each year. Only AES members are eligible to apply as PI (although not all participating collaborators must be AES members). Letters of intent will be submitted for a August 19, 2013 deadline, and reviewed by a senior research committee appointed by the AES president.
(Only AES members are eligible for the Award.)
Members interested in applying for a Research Initiative Award should send a letter of intent by August 19, 2013 explaining why they want to do the project, why this work is not covered by their current research support, and why the intended collaboration is important (max pages 5). In addition you must include a 250-word abstract, a two-page (NIH format) bio-sketch of the PI and a list of current funding, The letter should be e-mailed to ctubby@aesnet.org. Appropriate proposals will be selected within three weeks (notification on or about October 4, 2013.
Selected candidates will then need to submit a complete application by November 1, 2013 for funding in January 2014.
