Grants awarded for higher than $50,000 per year are based on funds available and may be offered if the applicant proposes particularly meritorious work and has provided clear justification based on need and timetable of the work proposed.

Both clinical and basic projects are of interest, using a variety of disciplinary approaches. Investigators must hold a relevant advanced degree (M.D. and/or Ph.D.) and have completed all research training. Open to investigators based at corporations as well as academic/university settings. Applicants may request up to $100,000 for one year. Health Sciences Student Fellowship Application Deadline: March 2, 2009 Award Amount: $3,000 stipend Program information and instructions available Fall 2008 The Health Sciences Student Fellowship stimulates individuals to pursue careers in epilepsy in either research or practice settings. Predoctoral training students in the Health Sciences may be accepted at any point in their schooling-following acceptance but before beginning the first year, or in the period immediately following their final year. ($3,000 stipend)
Behavioral Sciences Student Fellowship Application Deadline: March 2, 2009 Award Amount: $3,000 stipend Program information and instructions available Fall 2008 The Behavioral Sciences Student Fellowship stimulates individuals to pursue careers in epilepsy in either research or practice settings. Appropriate fields include sociology, social work, psychology, anthropology, nursing, economics, vocational rehabilitation, counseling, political science, and others relevant to epilepsy research or practice. Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible. ($3,000 stipend)
Grass Foundation/AES Robert S. Morison Fellowship The American Epilepsy Society is proud to announce its partnership with The Grass Foundation to offer the Robert S. Morison Fellowship for the training of academic clinician scientists in epilepsy. This two-year post-doctoral fellowship will be awarded to a promising young investigator possessing an M.D. degree who intends to continue training in basic science in an epilepsy research laboratory. The fellowship was created in honor of the contributions of Dr. Morison, one of the founding Trustees of The Grass Foundation. Albert and Ellen Grass started The Grass Foundation in the 1950s and have made many contributions to the scientific and social aspects of epilepsy. The Fellowship will be $40,000 per year for two years for salary with an additional $10,000 (maximum) per year to be used for institutional fringe benefits plus $1,000 for the fellow to travel to the AES Annual Meeting to present his/her results. The award will be announced and presented during the AES Annual Meeting. The next available fellowship will be funded January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2012. The application deadline will be August 31, 2009 and notification will be made by January 1, 2010. Physicians interested in being considered for a Robert S. Morrison Fellowship should apply for either a Post-doctoral Fellowship or a Research and Training Fellowship for Clinicians administered by the Epilepsy Foundation. The Morison Fellowship will be selected by the AES/EF Clinical Grant Selection Committee from among qualified applicants for the Post-doctoral Fellowships and Research and Training Fellowships. Research & Training WorkshopsThe American Epilepsy Society, through the Research and Training Committee, provides funding for targeted workshops intended for broad-based, national clinical or scientific audiences and on specific collaborative consensus or review topics in neuroscience that are novel and creative. Often, AES will provide support for travel stipends for junior faculty/trainees and for publication or proceedings. Funds may not be used for indirect costs.The purpose of the Research and Training Committee is to provide evaluation, planning and recommendations on AES sponsored research and training programs. The committee is responsible for identifying all funds currently used to support research or training by AES; reviewing other sources of support for epilepsy training and research (including the NIH funding and private funding); making recommendations to the AES board on an annual basis for allocation of research and training funds; and reviewing the outcomes of research and support training by previously funded investigators or previous trainees.
Selection of Awardees Applications for grants will be considered annually during two rounds. The deadline for the Spring round of grants is March 10, 2008. Grants will be awarded by the end of May. Deadline for the Fall round is October 6, 2008. These grants will be awarded by the end of November. Any applications received after the deadlines will be held until the following round of grants. Denied applications will not be automatically reconsidered for funding. To be reconsidered a new application must be submitted.
