Autism Speaks Request for Applications: Treatment Research Grants: Full- and Pilot-Level 2012 Cycle
Letter of Intent due: February 23, 2012, 8:00 PM Eastern Autism Speaks invites both Full- and Pilot-Level Treatment research grant applications to conduct innovative clinical studies of novel interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) throughout the lifespan. These may include medical approaches including complementary and alternative forms of health care and pharmacological treatments, as well as behavioral and/or psychosocial interventions, and evaluation of the efficacy, safety or therapeutic benefits of all types of interventions. Also appropriate are animal model studies that test the effects of novel compounds for reducing autism symptoms.
For all RFAs, Autism Speaks is focusing on a set of targeted research priorities for 2012. All treatment study projects will be required to demonstrate direct relevance to at least one of these targeted research priorities:
1. Understand environmental risk factors and their interaction with genetic susceptibility to enable prevention and improve diagnosis and treatment
2. Discover biomarkers that can improve risk assessment and subtype stratification that will allow for an individualized approach to treatment
3. Improve quality of life through more effective medicines, behavioral interventions, and technologies
4. Enhance diagnosis and treatment of underserved and under-studied populations, specifically,
• Nonverbal persons with ASD • Ethnically-diverse and/or low resource communities • Adults • Those with medical co-morbidities
5. Disseminate and implement evidence-based clinical practices to the broader community worldwide IMPORTANT: The relevance of the proposed research to ASD and Autism Speaks’ research priority areas must be explicitly described in the Letter of Intent (LOI) and full application.
Awards Autism Speaks will make a limited number of treatment research grants determined by the available financial resources. Full-level research grant 1-3 years $150,000/year maximum
Pilot-level research grant 1-2 years $60,000/year maximum
Autism Speaks utilizes a web-based application system for their grant submissions. All applications must be submitted through this system. It is imperative to indicate whether the submission is for the Full- or Pilot-Level Treatment research option.

Massage Therapy Foundation Student Case Report Contest
The Massage Therapy Foundation is delighted to invite you to participate in our Student Case Report Contest. This contest fosters an opportunity for students to develop research skills by conducting their own research case report in which they will summarize their results in the format of a professional research paper. Top-rated reports will receive recognition in the way of publication opportunities and cash rewards. This educational event also provides research acclaim for the host schools. Please see the Foundation’s Mission and Goals at www.massagetherapyfoundation.org.
Reports must be submitted online through www.massagetherapyfoundation.org by March 1, 2012
Students must report on independent clinical interventions on one client with guidance from a Case Report Supervisor and/or a Clinic Supervisor. This includes doing a literature review on the presenting condition or client goal; creating and implementing a treatment plan in accordance with the literature, the needs of the client, and the students’ expertise; writing up the results; discussing the implications of the outcomes; and offering suggestions for future study. Because a case report is on one client only we will not accept a case series on multiple clients. Submissions of this type will not be scored by the reviewers.
SCHOOL AND SUPERVISOR ROLES Participating massage therapy programs and their student supervisors play a crucial role in the success of this contest. In order for the student to successfully participate, the school must commit to:
• Provide a supervised clinical component as part of the school’s program, in compliance with local jurisdictional requirements. • Provide a case report supervisor for each student entering the competition; this person may or may not be the student’s clinical supervisor. • Promote the competition within the school. • Create an in-house process for selecting the best three case reports produced by the school’s students. Each school can submit a maximum of three case reports to the Foundation’s case report contest review committee. The student authors of the reports must give the school permission to submit their work to the Foundation contest.
Faculty members assisting students participating in the scholarly contest may be involved in one of two roles, or may fulfill both simultaneously:
1. Clinical Supervisor (CS): This role involves collaborative management of the case with the student in accordance with generally accepted standards of practice. This function, being a standard component of the student’s clinical education, is related yet distinct from the case report contest. If the CS is not performing the role of case report supervisor, he or she must verify to the CRS that the student’s report is an accurate reflection of the student’s clinical experience with the client. 2. Case Report Supervisor (CRS): This role involves acting as a guide and resource as the student researches and writes the case report. Note that the report must be the student’s work, and that in providing support and direction the CRS should not unduly influence the work. The CRS must sign off on the final report, attesting to its being the work of the student and an accurate representation of the student’s activities in meeting the contest’s requirements.
Logistics of the case report • Students must conduct a minimum of five (5) massage therapy sessions with the participating client. • It is highly recommended that massage therapy be the only new intervention in the client’s treatment plan. • Patient confidentiality and the security of health information must be maintained. No personal identification of the student or client may be included in the report.

American Art Therapy Association Pearlie Roberson Scholarship Award
Pearlie Roberson was an African American artist and art therapy client. Through her art therapy work, she painted and sculpted powerful metaphors that explained how she felt about herself during certain periods of her life, her spiritual belief in Christianity, her kinship connection to her African heritage, and her feelings about the progression of her illness. As acknowledged by her art therapist, “Art-making profoundly affected Pearlie’s final months and days; it provided an avenue to her own strength that helped through dark hours of long nights. It gave her perspective and peace.”
The Pearlie Roberson Scholarship Award is specifically designed to provide financial support for a project, undertaken by a Student or Professional member of the American Art Therapy Association, which targets multicultural aspects and capacities of art therapy. The award is based on the merit of the project proposal, not financial need. May 1, 2012 is the deadline for applying for this award. Please visit the American Art Therapy Association website for detailed application directions and instructions.
Recipients of the award are encouraged to present the winning project at the American Art Therapy Association Annual Conference. In addition, Pearlie Roberson Scholarship Award Projects will be under consideration for placement in the Robert E. Ault Archives.
