Greenwall Foundation Bioethics Grants Program

	Greenwall Foundation Bioethics Grants Program

Proposals should be submitted electronically in a single PDF document to admin@greenwall.org. In addition, three copies of the proposal should be mailed to The Greenwall Foundation, 420 Lexington Avenue, Suite 2500, New York, New York 10170. Requests for support should include:

	* Cover page, with applicant's name, institution, and contact information (mailing address, telephone number, facsimile number, and email address), project title, project grant period, and amount requested
* Executive Summary (one-page)
* Statement (not to exceed 8 pages single spaced) of (1) objectives and specific aims, (2) background and significance, (3) preliminary data, (4) research design -- methods and data analysis, and (5) plans for dissemination and future work
* References
* Appendices, including survey instruments, letters of support, and unpublished articles especially relevant to the work at hand.
* NIH-type curriculum vitae (not to exceed 4 pages) with statement of principal investigator's other financial support
* Summary budget (expense and income) specifying the amount requested from The Greenwall Foundation for this project - please download and use this form
* 501(c)3 tax exemption letter

The application should be in Times New Roman 12 point font. (Please note that this is larger than the NIH minimum.)

Proposal deadline is February 1, 2011 for the spring grant cycle

Proposals, both electronic and hard copies, must be received at The Foundation's offices by close of business (5:00 pm EST) on these dates or, should these dates fall on a weekend, on the next business day.

Applicants are encouraged to telephone The Foundation's President regarding their proposals well in advance of the application deadlines.

Applicants whose proposals are declined are customarily requested to wait a full year before submitting another proposal for consideration by The Foundation's Board.

Through its interdisciplinary program in bioethics, The Foundation provides funding for physicians, lawyers, philosophers, theologians and other professionals to address micro and macro issues in bioethics, providing guidance for those engaged in decision-making at the bedside as well as those responsible for shaping institutional and public policy.

The Foundation is especially interested in the work of junior investigators and pilot projects that may lead to NIH support, and it is prepared to address issues regarded by some as sensitive or potentially controversial.

The Foundation is not normally interested in proposals to support equipment purchase, facility construction or renovation, or general operating expenses, and will not normally consider grants to private foundations, endowment funds, or individual applicants.

Grant making in bioethics is focused on five programs: (1) research and project grants; (2) The Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program; (3) The Greenwall Fellowship Program in Bioethics and Health Policy; (4) The Oscar M Ruebhausen Visiting Professorship; and (5) The Kornfeld Program in Bioethics and Patient Care.

Effective January 1, 2012, The Foundation's grantmaking will focus on building and enriching the Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics. The final application cycle for the program (as presently constituted) will be spring 2011 with an application deadline of February 1, 2011.

For more informations and to discuss the implications of these changes, please contact William C. Stubing, President of The Foundation.

Rolex Awards for Enterprise

	Rolex Awards for Enterprise

The next Rolex Awards for Enterprise will be presented in 2012 to five new Laureates for their projects that demonstrate innovative thought and benefit the world we live in. For their new ventures or completion of ongoing projects, each Laureate receives US$100,000, a Rolex chronometer, and the benefits of international publicity.

	Is your project eligible?

The Rolex Awards are open to any individual of any age, with a concrete working project. Proposals may be submitted in almost any area of activity, including science and health; applied technology; exploration and discovery; the environment; and cultural heritage.

	How to Apply

To apply, after reading the Rules and Conditions, create an account and fill out a pre-application form. You will have one month, from the moment your account is created, to complete the pre-application form in English.

The final deadline for submitting a pre-application is 31 May 2011. However, you are strongly advised to submit a pre-application form as soon as possible.

Pre-applicants whose projects are selected by Rolex for further consideration will be invited to submit a full application.

The Rolex Laureates are selected by an independent panel of international specialists at the top of their fields, supported by a team of researchers.

Winners are chosen based on three main criteria: spirit of enterprise, originality, and potential impact. Judges also consider how the award will contribute to the completion of the project.

The Jury changes for each cycle of Rolex Awards. The 2012 jury will be announced in 2011.

Since 1976, more than 100 leading experts from 24 countries have served on the Rolex Awards Jury. They include French research virologist Professor Luc Montagnier, Russian deep-ocean explorer Anatoli Sagalevitch and American astronaut and educator Dr Katherine Sullivan.

GRAMMY Foundation Grant Program: Scientific Research Projects

A letter of inquiry is required before submission of a full application. Inquiries must be received by no later than Oct. 1. If the project is recommended for further consideration, the applicant will be invited to submit a full application in early November. Full applications will be due within approximately four weeks of notification and grant awards will be announced in March 2011.

Scientific Research Projects: $20,000 Maximum Award

The GRAMMY Foundation Grant Program awards grants to organizations and individuals to support research on the impact of music on the human condition. Examples might include the study of the effects of music on mood, cognition and healing, as well as the medical and occupational well-being of music professionals and the creative process underlying music. Priority is given to projects with strong methodological design as well those addressing an important research question.

Scientific Research Project Grant General Guidelines

This initial approach includes the information listed below:

	1. Project contact and overview
2. A brief description of the project, including but not limited to the following items:
* Research question
* Methodology outline (number of subjects, control groups, etc.)
* Impact/application of research
* Existing project partners and/or financial support, if any
3. Brief biographies of key personnel

The GRAMMY Foundation Grant Program awards grants to organizations and individuals to support efforts that advance research and implementation of original scientific research projects related to the impact of music on the human condition, such as the links between music study and early childhood development, the effects of music therapy and the medical and occupational well being of music professionals.

If after reviewing the guidelines and form on our Web site, you have specific questions about the guidelines or process, send an e-mail to loi@grammy.com.

American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics Stanley D. Tylman Research Program

The American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics supports postdoctoral student research in fixed prosthodontics through the Stanley D. Tylman Research Program. Research areas significant to the clinical practice of fixed prosthodontics are supported. Tylman Awards are subsequently given for outstanding research supported by a Tylman Grant.

Amount of Grants and Use of Funds

	* As many as four $4,000 grants are funded each year.
* Grant funds may be used to fund direct costs related to small equipment, supplies, contractual costs, and other aspects of the proposed project.
* A Tylman Grant does not support indirect administrative costs, travel, or meeting expenses.

	Eligibility

	* Full-time students enrolled in any postdoctoral program in the United States or Canada conducting research pertinent to fixed prosthodontic may apply.
* Priority for funding of grants and awards will be given to students in prosthodontic programs.
* Pre-doctoral dental students are not eligible.
* First or second year prosthodontic students may apply. Third year prosthodontic students are not eligible.
* Proposals must be endorsed by the program director of an accredited prosthodontic program.
* Grants are distributed through a competitive funding process.

	Deadlines

	* Applications are accepted from February 1-March 1 each year.
* For first year students, final research reports are due on June 30 in the second calendar year following the awarding of funds (approximately 25 months).
* For second-year prosthodontic and all non-prosthodontic students, final research reports are due on June 30 in the first calendar year following the awarding of funds (approximately 13 months).

Responsibilities for Research Completion and Reporting

The Academy requires thorough execution and reporting of research for which it provides support. Instances of non-compliance with grant guidelines and obligations by a program will jeopardize the eligibility of the program to receive a Tylman Grant or Award in the future.

Downloadable PDF documents are available on the Tylman Downloads Page http://www.fixedprosthodontics.org/tylman_down.html

	Tylman Research Awards

	* As many as three Tylman Awards are presented for outstanding manuscripts received each year.
* To be eligible for an Award, authors must have submitted their research report for peer review to The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.
* The researcher submitting the most outstanding manuscript is expected to make an oral presentation at the subsequent Annual Meeting.
* Researchers submitting the 2nd and 3rd place manuscripts are invited to present their research as a table clinic at the subsequent Annual Meeting.
* All awardees are formally recognized at the Annual Meeting Luncheon.
* Awardees receive:
o Cash Awards: 1st Place $2000, 2nd Place $1000, 3rd Place $500
o Travel funding to attend the Academy's Annual Meeting (contingent upon winners presenting their research at the meeting)

Caring for Carcinoid Foundation-American Association for Cancer Research Grants for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research

Application Deadline: September 15, 2010, at 12:00 noon Eastern Time

	Decision Date: January 15, 2011

Start of Grant Term: February 1, 2011

Recognition Event for Grant Recipients at AACR 102nd Annual Meeting 2011: April 5, 2011

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation-AACR Grants for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research represent a joint effort to promote and support innovative cancer research. These grants are available to independent junior and senior investigators to develop and study new ideas and approaches that have direct application and relevance to carcinoid tumors or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Proposed research may be in any discipline of basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological cancer research.

Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field as well as from investigators with experience in other areas of cancer research who have promising ideas or research approaches that can be applied to carcinoid tumor and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor research.

These two-year grants will provide $250,000 over the grant term ($125,000 per year). Grant funds support direct research expenses, which may include the salary and benefits of the grant recipient and any collaborators (limited to 25 percent of the total grant), postdoctoral or clinical research fellows and/or research assistants, equipment, travel and supplies (indirect costs not permitted).

Mentored researchers working in carcinoid tumor and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor research should consider applying for the Raymond and Beverly Sackler AACR Fellowships for Ileal Carcinoid Tumor Research.

It is anticipated that two grants will be funded.

	Research Project Criteria

Proposals will be accepted for new ideas and innovative approaches that have direct application and relevance to carcinoid tumors and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Proposed research projects can be any in discipline including basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological cancer research.

Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field as well as from investigators with experience in other areas of cancer research who have promising ideas or research approaches that they will directly apply to carcinoid tumors or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Investigators who have powerful experimental tools that will lead to a better understanding of neuroendocrine tumor biology, elucidate the mechanisms of currently available therapies in neuroendocrine tumors, and identify new treatment targets for carcinoid tumors or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are encouraged to apply. The applicability of the proposed project to carcinoid tumor or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor research must be fully described. A track record of research in this specific field is not a requirement for funding.

Genomic, RNA, and proteomic studies of carcinoid tumors and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors that may complement ongoing genome-wide sequencing efforts funded by Caring for Carcinoid Foundation will be considered but special emphasis will be placed on research that is not duplicative of projects currently funded by the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (see www.caringforcarcinoid.org for listing of grants).
Applicant Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (including Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.C., N.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., Sc.D., D.N.S., Pharm.D., or equivalent doctoral degree, or a combined clinical and research doctoral degree) in a related field and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral or professional degree.

Applications will be accepted from independent investigators at all levels who are affiliated with an academic, medical or research institution anywhere in the world. There are no citizenship or geographic requirements.

Employees or subcontractors of a government entity or for-profit private industry are not eligible. Exceptions may apply if an applicant holds a full-time position at a veterans' hospital or national laboratory in the United States. Employees or subcontractors of a government entity or for-profit private industry may serve as collaborators, but no grant funds may be directed towards these individuals or their respective institutions. Contact the AACR before submitting an application to determine your eligibility.

Applicants with a question about eligibility are encouraged to contact the AACR at grants@aacr.org, prior to submitting an application.

	Program Guidelines & Application Instructions

Call For Papers: Women's Bar Association of District of Columbia and the Washington College of Law 2010 Legal Essay Writing Competition

Invitation to Submit Essays in the Dedication to the Advancement of Women's Rights The Modern American (TMA) announces the American University Washington College of Law (WCL) essay competition, open to all full-time and part-time law students enrolled in and attending an accredited law school in the United States.

	OVERVIEW:
The Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia (WBA) and WCL share an important history in advancing women in the law and women's rights.

Women's bodily freedom is an issue that has hung in the balance for a number of years. Yet new, controversial laws that criminalize pregnant women's behavior and girls' refusal to receive arguably harmful immunizations have put women's bodily freedom back into the forefront of the public's attention. What is the status of women's bodily freedom and what should women's rights advocates anticipate looking forward?

The winner of the competition will not only receive $1,000, but will also have the opportunity to publish his/her/zer essay in TMA.

PRIZES INCLUDE: $1000 and potential publication in TMA.

The status and future of women's bodily freedom in American policy-making and jurisprudence.

Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Bishop Fellowship Program

Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Bishop Fellowship Program

The Bishop Fellowship Program was inaugurated in 2000 to prepare senior family medicine faculty to assume positions of greater responsibility in academic medicine and health care leadership. It was developed because of the vision of F. Marian Bishop, PhD, founding member and former president of the Foundation, and is supported by the F. Marian Bishop Charitable Trust. This 1-year program works in partnership with the American Council on Education’s ACE Fellowship program. Fellows attend three week-long seminars on higher education issues organized by ACE, and make three week-long visits to a medical school where the host dean or other administrator serves as a mentor.

	Bishop Fellowship Program Components

The 1-year Bishop Fellowship program consists of nine components that address the essential skills and knowledge.

	1. Formal Education
Three ACE seminars, each lasting 1 week
One 5-day AAMC Executive Development Seminar

	2. Readings & Preparation between Seminars
Fellows complete assigned readings and “homework” tasks, such as completing leadership style instruments, and securing and entering into their institutions’ financial information.

	3. Project
Each Fellow identifies a project he/she is interested in and which will be of benefit to both the host and home school.

	4. The Fellow’s Learning Plan
Fellows, along with their nominating institution, design an individualized learning plan to address unique needs.

	5. The Off-campus Learning Experience
Each Fellow spends at least three weeks with a dean or other high-level administrator at a host institution. As they are mentored by a team of experienced administrators, Fellows observe how other institutions and their leaders problem solve and handle change.

	6. The National Institutional Network
Fellows develop colleagues from within the Bishop and the ACE programs’ mentors and speakers that will serve them well throughout their careers.

	7. National Policy Forums
Because effective local leadership depends on knowledge of both national and international environments, Fellows are required to attend national meetings, particularly the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Council on Education seminars, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and American Council on Education annual meetings.

	8. Other Visits
Fellows are encouraged to visit other campuses to enhance their learning about a particular strategic issue as well as broaden their perspectives generally.

	9. Home Plan
Each Fellow and home dean develop a plan for how the Fellow’s skills will be used at the home institution. It is important that the Fellow have the opportunity to use the newly acquired skills as soon as possible.

	The Nominating Institution:

Pays the salary and benefits during the Fellowship year
Assures that the Fellows will have time to complete readings and homework tasks and to attend seminars, national meetings, and off-campus visits

	The Bishop Fellowship pays for:

ACE Seminars and AAMC Executive Development Conference tuition, travel, housing, and food
Registration, travel, housing and food at annual meetings of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Council on Education, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine
Travel for three week-long visits and food and housing at the host medical school

	Bishop Fellowship Program Timeline

Completed nominations and candidate application materials are due on or before October 5, 2010.
Finalists will be selected and notified by late-October, 2010.
Fellows identify and confirm host dean, identify project, and develop year’s learning plan by August 15, 2011.
The program begins August 15, 2011 and ends the following August 14, 2012.

	Application Forms (3 parts):

All application materials should be sent electronically to Kay Frank, kfrank@stfm.org, by October 5, 2010

American College of Surgeons Faculty Research Fellowships

	July 1, 2011—June 30, 2013

The American College of Surgeons is offering two-year faculty research fellowships, through the generosity of Fellows, Chapters, and friends of the College, to surgeons entering academic careers in surgery or a surgical specialty. The fellowship is to assist a surgeon in the establishment of a new and independent research program. Applicants should have demonstrated their potential to work as independent investigators. The fellowship award is $40,000 per year for each of two years, to support the research.

Franklin H. Martin, MD, FACS, Faculty Research Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons

This fellowship honors Franklin H. Martin, MD, FACS, founder of the American College of Surgeons.

	C. James Carrico, MD, FACS, Faculty Research Fellowship for the Study of Trauma and Critical Care

This fellowship honors C. James Carrico, MD, FACS, and is designated for research in trauma and critical care.

Louis Argenta, MD, FACS, Faculty Research Fellowship for the Study of Wound Care

This one-year fellowship honors Louis Argenta, MD, FACS, and is designated for research in wound care.

General policies covering the granting of the American College of Surgeons Faculty Research Fellowships are:

The fellowship is open to Fellows or Associate Fellows of the College who have:

	(1) completed the chief residency year or accredited fellowship training within the preceding three years; and (2) received a full-time faculty appointment in a department of surgery or a surgical specialty at a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in the United States or by the Committee for Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools in Canada. Preference will be given to applicants who directly enter academic surgery following residency or fellowship.

This award may be used by the recipient for support of his/her research or academic enrichment in any fashion that the recipient deems maximally supportive of his/ her investigations. The fellowship grant is to support the research of the recipient and is not to diminish or replace the usual, expected compensation or benefits. Indirect costs are not paid to the recipient or to the recipient’s institution.

Application for this fellowship may be submitted even if comparable application has been made to organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or industry sources. If the recipient is offered a scholarship, fellowship, or research career development award from such an agency or organization, it is the responsibility of the recipient to contact the College’s Scholarships Administrator to request approval of the additional award.*

The College encourages the applicant to leverage the funds provided by this fellowship with time and monies provided by the applicant’s department. Formal statements of matching funds and time from the applicant’s department will promote favorable review by the College.

Supporting letters from the head of the department of surgery (or the surgical specialty) and from the mentor supervising the applicant’s research effort must be submitted. This approval would involve a commitment to continuation of the academic position and of facilities for research. Only in exceptional circumstances will more than one fellowship be granted in a single year to applicants from the same institution.

The applicant must submit a research plan and budget for the two-year period of fellowship, even though renewed approval by the Scholarships Committee of the College is required for the second year.

A minimum of 50 percent of the Fellow’s time must be spent in the research proposed in the application. This percentage may run concurrently with the time requirements of NIH or other accepted funding.

The Martin and Carrico Fellows are expected to attend the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons in 2013 to present a report to the Surgical Forum and to receive a certificate at the annual meeting of the Scholarships Committee.

The Dr. Louis Argenta Faculty Research Fellowship, supported by Kinetic Concepts, Inc., is a one-year award in the amount of $40,000 to help a surgeon establish an independent research program on wound care. All of the same requirements apply as for the Martin and Carrico Fellows, except that the time period is one year. The Argenta Fellow will attend and report at the 2012 Clinical Congress.

	* The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to review potentially overlapping awards and adjust its award accordingly.

The closing date for receipt of applications and all supporting documents is November 1, 2010. Application forms may be obtained upon request from:

2012 American College of Surgeons Traveling Fellowship to Australia and New Zealand

The International Relations Committee of the American College of Surgeons announces the availability of a traveling fellowship to Australia and New Zealand.

	Purpose

The purpose of this fellowship is to encourage international exchange of information concerning surgical science, practice, and education and to establish professional and academic collaborations and friendships.

The ACS Traveling Fellow will visit Australia and New Zealand, and a Traveling Fellow from Australia or New Zealand will visit North America.

	Basic Requirements

The scholarship is available to a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in most of the surgical specialties who meets the following requirements:

Has a major interest and accomplishment in basic sciences related to surgery
Holds a current full-time academic appointment in Canada or the United States
Is under 45 years of age on the date the application is filed
Is enthusiastic, personable, and possesses good communication skills

	Activities

The Fellow is required to spend a minimum of two or three weeks in Australia and New Zealand.

To attend and participate in the Annual Scientific Congress of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (7–11 May 2012)
To participate in the formal convocation ceremony of that congress
To attend and address the ANZ Chapter meeting during that congress
To visit at least two medical centers in Australia and New Zealand before or after the Annual Scientific Congress of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons to lecture and to share clinical and scientific expertise with the local surgeons
In the event that the selected applicant is from a surgical specialty which is not participating in the RACS Congress, specific negotiations will be necessary to ensure the Traveling Fellow’s participation in a national meeting of that specialty.

The academic and geographic aspects of the itinerary will be finalized in consultation and mutual agreement between the Fellow and the President or designated representative of the Australia and New Zealand Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. The surgical centers to be visited depend to some extent on the special interests and expertise of the Fellow and his or her previously established professional contacts with surgeons in Australia and New Zealand.

His or her spouse is welcome to accompany the successful applicant. There will be many opportunities for social interaction, as well as these professional activities.

	Financial Support

The College will provide the sum of $8,000 U.S. to the successful applicant, who will also be exempted from registration fees for the Annual Scientific Congress. He/she must meet all travel and living expenses. Senior Chapter representatives will consult with the Fellow about the centres to be visited in Australia and New Zealand, the local arrangements for each centre, and other advice and recommendations about travel schedules. The Fellow is to make his/her own travel arrangements in North America, as this makes available to him/her reduced fares and travel packages for travel in Australia and New Zealand.

The American College of Surgeons’ International Relations Committee will select the Fellow after review and evaluation of the final applications. A personal interview may be requested prior to the final selection.

Applications for this traveling fellowship may be obtained from the College’s website or by writing to the International Liaison Section, American College of Surgeons, 633 N. Saint Clair St., Chicago, IL 60611-3211.

The closing date for receipt of completed applications is 15 November 2010. The successful applicant and an alternate will be selected and notified by March 2011.

Hip Society Awards 2011

	Hip Society Awards 2011

The Hip Society announces three awards for papers submitted from the various training programs or from practicing orthopaedic surgeons for presentation at the annual Hip Society open meeting. These awards are named after men who have made outstanding contributions to reconstructive surgery of the hip and will be based on the criteria that follow:

The Otto Aufranc and John Charnley Awards: Papers submitted in these categories are to be based on innovative research, either clinical or basic, encompassing important advances in the management of hip disorders.
The Frank Stinchfield Award: This prize is given to a resident or fellow in training who submits an outstanding contribution concerning hip problems.
Any or all of these awards will be granted annually at the discretion of the Awards Committee of The Hip Society. The author(s) of each winning Award Paper will receive a $2,000 honorarium.

The Hip Society is soliciting papers, which are offered in competition for these awards. All submissions should represent original work that has not been previously published nor submitted for publication. Please indicate if your submission is a resident or fellow paper for the Frank Stinchfield Award. Submitted papers must be in publishable form. These papers are evaluated "blind" so we ask that the author not have his name or the name of his institution anywhere, but on the title page. Papers should be submitted electronically and must be submitted by December 1, 2010.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING HIP SOCIETY AWARD PAPERS TO CLINICAL
ORTHOPAEDICS AND RELATED RESEARCH

All Award submissions must meet the published guidelines for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (https://www.editorialmanager.com/corr/). All manuscripts must be electronically submitted at the same Web site. When authors submit and upload material they must select “Society Awards” when asked for “Article Type.” Authors will then be required to selection a “Section/Category,” and should select, “2011 Hip Society Awards.” (Failure to properly select the proper article type and section/category may result in improper processing and not being considered for the intended award.) Submissions winning an award of The Society will be published in CORR with the annual Proceedings of The Society. Please call the CORR office (215-392-0270) if you have problems with the submission. All submissions must include a cover letter signed by the corresponding author
(1) documenting appropriate participation of all authors,
(2) stating all coauthors have seen and agree with the contents of the manuscript, and
(3) indicating the work has not been submitted or published elsewhere.

Please contact the CORR office (215-392-0270) for further information. Awards will be reviewed by The Society. You will be notified by The Society (not by Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research) regarding all decisions.

Herb Society of America Grant for Educators

Herb Society of America Grant for Educators

The Herb Society of America's mission is to promote the knowledge, use and delight of herbs through educational programs, research, and sharing the experience of its members with the community. The Grant for Educators challenges individuals, groups or small businesses to develop and deliver learning experiences to the public. Each year, the Grant Committee anticipates funding one or two grants for a total of $5,000.

The grant rewards innovative projects that enhance herbal education in school systems, in communities, or in any public forum (electronic or person-to-person). It requires learning goals and a mechanism to measure the educational outcomes.

Applications are requested from educators (formal or informal teachers), persons engaged/employed in botanical or horticultural activities, museum directors, botanical / garden writers, small herbal business owners. Proposals from students will not be accepted.

	Grant Intentions
The goal of this grant is the delivery of a project that specifically promotes herbal education, beyond the usual garden activities. A proposal may be considered if the project seeks to deliver an existing educational program in a significantly different manner or to a larger target audience (e.g., classroom to distance learning, regional program to national). Please note that projects previously funded by a Society Research Grant will not be funded.

	1. The Grant is not intended for:

	personal financial aid, stipend, salary or a business loan;
seed money for a project;
monies to promote or sell any book or product;
personal travel;
equipment upgrades (acquisition of a new computer or LCD projector, for example);
indirect expenses, e.g. publishing fees or an exhibit's installation costs;
garden construction, planting or maintenance.
2. The grant is not intended to support activities that would occur in the usual course of business, such as the development of a college course or publication.

	3. The program content must not recommend the use of herbs as medicines or in the treatment of any medical condition.

	Application Procedure:
Applications must be e-mailed or postmarked by December 31, 2010 to be considered for an award. Late proposals will not be accepted. Announcement of grant recipient(s) will be made on April 1, 2011.

The proposal should be typed in an 11 pt. Arial or equivalent font. Lines should be double-spaced. Hand written proposals will not be accepted. If a hard copy is submitted, please mail six(6) copies of the proposal packet to the Society's headquarters.

	Proposal Packet
1. Application form completed in its entirety.

	2. Statement of qualifications (This is not intended to be a professional resume and should not exceed one double-spaced page)

	Previous teaching or educational experience
Pertinent publications or related activities
Brief biographical sketch. If this is a group project, include the names of all participants on the Application form but a biographical sketch only of the team leader(s).
3. Comprehensive project description of the program (not to exceed two double-spaced pages.)

Identification of the target audience and any required knowledge level
Objectives and educational significance of the program
Learning objectives and expected outcomes of the project
Outcome assessment
Specific time line for this project
4. Line-by-line budget

Please do not submit unnecessary letters, attachments or binders as they will create a paperwork burden.

	Summary of Terms
1. The Grant is for a period of work not to exceed one year.

	2. The Grant is paid in two installments. The initial payment is made at the time of the award. The final payment is sent upon receipt of the final report and successful delivery or presentation of the project.

	3. Progress reports are required twice during the year (or at the conclusion of the project if earlier than one year).

The Herb Society of America, as a recipient of a bequest from the estate of Donald Samull, has established two herb garden grants for teachers in grades 3 through 6. Mr. Samull was an elementary school teacher who used his love of herbs in the classroom with his 3rd-6th grade students. These grants will ensure that his tradition of using herbs with students will continue for years to come.

Public and/or private 3rd through 6th grade teachers, with classes of a minimum of 15 students may apply for an indoor or an outdoor herb garden grant.

The classrooms selected will receive four (4) Prepara® Power Plant pro indoor soil-less gardening stations and educational materials to use in the classroom. The Prepara® Power Plant pro gardening station is all that is needed to grow herbs indoors. Each gardening station will include the unit, grow sponge, nutrient, seeds and the grow lamp. The Herb Society of America will provide the educational materials.

The Herb Society of America will select four (4) schools/classrooms to receive $200 "Seed Money" to establish an outdoor herb garden. The funds may be used for supplies such as soil, plant trays, containers, child or youth sized tools, etc. The school may need to seek additional funding and support from other sources. The Herb Society of America will provide the educational materials and herb seeds.

Systems Biology Approaches to Brain Tumor Research Research Grant

Systems Biology Approaches to Brain Tumor Research Research Grant

	Deadline: December 17, 2010

Grant awards will range from $40k to $100k for the year depending upon the needs presented in the application. Funds may be used for travel, meetings and other appropriate expenses associated with non-laboratory planning requirements and collaborations, as well as for traditional (e.g. salary, etc.) appropriations.

National Brain Tumor Society seeks grant applications that embrace a systems biology approach for scientific research to benefit brain tumor patients.

Beyond the complication of the existence of a large number of types of brain tumors lies the dynamic biological complexity of tumors at a number of levels ranging from genomic, biochemical, cellular and micro-environmental. These levels of complexity characterize both differences between individual tumors of the same histopathological type as well as within and between the different cells that make up individual tumors. Much laboratory and clinical research, as well as standard of care therapy experience (surgery, radio- and chemotherapy), has demonstrated the enormous resilience of brain tumors such as glioblastoma (GBM) and their capacity to adapt to and overcome a variety of standard and experimental therapeutic approaches. Targeted therapies that hold the promise of being more effective than standard therapies have thus far been largely ineffective in trials that focus on single targets.

While it is generally accepted that combination therapies may be required, which combinations will be most effective is not known. Furthermore, the complexity of tumor signal transduction circuitry and adaptive alterations, heterogeneity of cells within tumors, and their enhanced mutational rate coupled with extreme cellular phenotypic plasticity makes these types of tumors dynamic moving targets even for combination therapies.

The tenet of modern approaches to cancer research involves the identification and validation of new targets, and the subsequent identification of therapeutic agents directed against those targets. For tumors such as GBM, a number of targets have been identified presenting a sizeable number of therapeutic combinations to be evaluated in clinical trials. While the identification of more new targets may be valuable, and the “rational” evaluation of therapeutics directed against targets based on current knowledge is valuable, the field has reached a tipping point. In thinking of future therapies, it will be necessary to move away from treatment modalities intended to alter a target(s) without taking into account the adaptive response of targeted cells or other nontargeted cells. Research needs to go beyond looking at targets in isolation and needs to addresses a higher-level biological order presented by tumor complexity, adaptability and the emergence of a complex adaptive system. National Brain Tumor Society seeks to do just that, to encourage systems biology research approaches through this RFA.

For more information on this viewpoint on the support of systems biology brain tumor please read the NBTS perspective paper at: www.braintumor.org/Perspectives.

SYSTEM BIOLOGY AND BRAIN TUMOR RESEARCH:
Systems biology research involves the evaluation of complex biological systems as a whole, comprised of interconnecting networks of multiple layers of component systems.

Understanding the higher-level properties of brain tumors as interactive complex biological systems rather than collections of individual component parts (e.g. genes, proteins, etc.) or immediate interactive component partners offers the promise of finding therapeutic approaches that include effective ways to prevent compensatory and adaptive tumor mechanisms that allow for their development of resistance and for their recurrence.

Systems biology is frequently described as a field at the intersection of biology, applied mathematics, engineering and the physical sciences. A brain tumor systems biology research program that incorporates all of these components might be considered a “top down” program due to the nature of its inclusive approach. These are exemplified by programs in the comprehensive genomic/molecular profiling of GBMs, and the characterization of individual cells of single brain tumors using nanotechnology and microfluidics. These types of typically large research programs are important for the progression of the field and need to be encouraged.

It is the goal of NBTS to encourage research programs that although they may be less expansive, they incorporate the essence of a systems biology perspective. The essential core of this perspective is that to understand the biological complexity of brain tumors in order to find approaches that tumors cannot survive or adapt to, it is critical to know the broader biological consequences, interconnections and interactions that result from the inhibition of any particular target or targets. The broader therapeutic consequences of targeting a particular pathway cannot be understood by only studying the effect that has occurred on the intended target, but rather the effect on the entire system and how it seeks homeostasis has to be evaluated. Such a strategy that emanates from the study of even a single target might be thought of as a “bottom up” systems biology research approach.

NBTS RESEARCH GRANTS IN BRAIN TUMOR SYSTEMS BIOLOGY:
National Brain Tumor Society believes in the potential positive impact of brain tumor research that embraces a systems biology perspective at all levels, from a bottom up approach to a top down approach. NBTS looks to encourage a systems biology perspective in any area of brain tumor research ranging from signal transduction to immunotherapeutics to mathematical algorithms for high throughput testing of therapeutic hypotheses.

NBTS recognizes the challenges in developing creative and innovative research programs from this perspective, particularly for the bottom up approach. As such, NBTS will employ a two-stage grant process.

The ultimate goal at the end of the two-stage process is the development of testable therapeutic approaches in brain tumor patients that takes into account the various levels of tumor complexity and that has the potential to eradicate or manage brain tumors in a way that prevents them from utilizing adaptive mechanisms that enable them to survive and/or recur.

The purpose of large multi-year Stage 2 Advanced grants is to support the research required to understand areas of research from a systems biology perspective and to apply that understanding into the development of an actionable translational plan.

The purpose of the smaller one-year Stage 1 Standard grants is to provide the time and support required to effectively develop a comprehensive strategy and team for Stage 2 research. Stage 1 grants are intended to support the feasibility/planning studies needed to develop that strategy. As such, Stage 1 applications should envision and describe an overview of what Stage 2 research would look like and articulate the roadmap and plans for getting there.

Proposed studies that would result in the accumulation of larger sets of data (e.g. –omic analyses) without etermining an understanding of biological context and effects will not be considered for support.

Eligibility for applying for a Stage 2 grant is contingent on going through the Stage 1 process. NBTS looks to award from seven to ten Stage 1 grants to high quality applications and about three Stage 2 grants.

	Stage 1:
NBTS seeks creative systems biology feasibility/planning study grant applications. These Standard Grants will be awarded for 1 year of study/planning.

During this stage support will be provided for either (1) laboratory research that establishes the basis of a larger systems biology brain tumor research program (potentially funded in stage two); and/or (2) the development of a research plan that transforms your particular area of research into a systems biology research approach that incorporates a broader biological context and that will serve as the basis of a larger research program (potentially funded in stage two). Laboratory research is not required for the planning studies. It is the goal of NBTS to fund both types of feasibility/planning studies in this stage. The expected deliverable of both feasibility/planning types of study is a detailed research proposal for the stage two grant applications.

For either type of project, applications should clearly describe the plans and timeline for accomplishing the goals of year one studies. Collaboration in creative and innovative ways and/or with partners not traditionally considered is highly encouraged. Plans for creating integrated teams of collaborators should be described.

Keeping in mind that the intent of Stage 2 research is translational application, specific plans for incorporating that translational goal should be built into Stage 1 studies and application, such as the inclusion of clinical scientist(s) into the research team.

A description for your plan for bioinformatics analyses (e.g. the right analytical tools and bioinformatics experts) should be included as needed.

Grant awards will range from $40k to $100k for the year depending upon the needs presented in the application. Funds may be used for travel, meetings and other appropriate expenses associated with non-laboratory planning requirements and collaborations, as well as for traditional (e.g. salary, etc.) appropriations.

Stage 2:
This research grant application stage will be built upon the first year Stage 1 grants. These grants will be awarded for 3 years at a level of $500k/year or greater. Only projects supported in Stage 1 will be considered for funding in Stage 2.

Both “top down” and “bottom up” brain tumor systems biology research will be considered for funding. This applies to any area of brain tumor research. The goal is the identification and development of effective interventional approaches based upon an understanding of the broader biological interconnections and complexities that characterize brain tumors.

The expected deliverable at the end of the 3 years is the elucidation and description of an implementable plan for translation of research into a therapeutic approach and clinical trial. Details about the application for Stage 2 grants will be issued at a later date.
